Miyabi Tacoma

Izakaya Dining on the South Sound

Miyabi Tacoma gets high marks for authenticity. That's largely thanks to the executive chef, a Japanese culinary whiz who's divided his time between Tokyo and Seattle kitchens for more than two decades. At Miyabi Tacoma, he serves traditional izakaya—shareable small plates of Japanese-style tapas. Offerings range from pan-fried gyoza to skewers of yakitori chicken gizzards. There's also plenty to commend Miyabi's sushi menu: one The News Tribune contributor called out its "mirugai (geoduck) nigiri, which I haven’t seen recently around town." Diners can also sip libations such as shōchū, cocktails, and Japanese beer while lounging in a private tatami room or a main dining area festooned with paper lanterns.

100 Bites of Japan

All told, the chef crafts more than 100 izakaya delicacies. You probably won't taste them all on your first visit, but if you try, you might earn newfound respect from your usually grumbly stomach. Here are small-plate highlights:

  • Beef tongue stew
  • Sushi rolls
  • Bacon-wrapped oysters
  • Seattle Nabe
  • Yakitoro
