Early humans developed the ability to sprint in order to chase down sprightly prey and invented long-distance running to escape from slowly approaching glaciers. Follow in their fossilized footsteps with today’s Groupon to the Houston Rhythm and Blues Half Marathon and 5K, presented by Finish Strong Sports. Both races take place on Sunday, February 19, with the 5K beginning at 7 a.m. and the half-marathon at 7:30 a.m. Choose between the following options:

The Houston Rhythm and Blues Half Marathon and 5K presented by Finish Strong Sports’ inaugural race will zigzag through downtown Houston in order to raise awareness for healthy lifestyle habits. As 5K racers and half-marathoners run or walk, the sound of live blues bands stationed throughout the course will tickle ear buds and disguise the sounds of squeaky sneakers. Race organizers encourage participants to dress up as their favorite rhythm & blues musician or character for the race, as several of the event sponsors will award a prize to the best-costumed racer.
After crossing the finish line, a celebratory concert kicks off as a celebrity announces the race winners and grand-prize winner and awards honorable mention to the person who pogo-sticked the entire way. Those running recreationally can try to earn a take-home prize by entering into a raffle that benefits local charities, including APHON, San José Clinic, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and SER Jobs for Progress. VIP racers will also take home a pair of Spenco Slides sandals, while half-marathoners take home a commemorative 8”x10” photo of them posing with their favorite discarded gel pack.
Houston Rhythm and Blues Half Marathon and 5K
Come February, thousands of runners and spectators will migrate to Sam Houston Park for the Houston Rhythm and Blues Half Marathon and 5K. Like many marathons and 5K races, this event raises money for local charities and entertains runners with postrace festivities. What distinguishes this particular race from other races, however, is the route: it's lined with R & B bands from throughout Texas. Whether you're running for fun or shooting for a PR, dressing up is encouraged, and prizes will be awarded to participants with the best R & B costumes.
