  • Shaped Bodies Fitness
Tell us about your business. Shaped Bodies Fitness offers outdoor boot-camp fitness classes. We specialize in full-body workouts at every session. We also take pride in the fact that each workout is unique. In the four years that we've been in business, we have yet to repeat a workout. Nor will we ever. This ensures that you're getting the best workout possible. Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? We motivate our clients with a simple message. It's your workout—own It. We understand that body types are different. With that said, we use our stop watch and encourage our campers to do as many reps within a specific time frame. As you continue to workout, your endurance level continues to increase. It's a journey and we are here to work with each and everyone one of our campers. We keep it fun, positive, and upbeat. No yelling; just motivation. What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make? We have many clients that start our program with doubt. They doubt that they can actually stick with it. They doubt that they can do and complete the workouts. By week two ... those same campers that had doubt are kicking butts and taking names. They're excited and ready. Their attitudes change from "I might" into "I can, I will, and I did." That's their transformation. That's when they truly own it. When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness? I've always exercised over the years, while working in corporate America. Four years ago, life dealt me a funny hand. My corporate job transferred to Arizona. There's no way I could relocate, being the true Texan gal that I am. So I took the opportunity to think about what I really wanted to do with the rest of my life. I found I was happier while working out. So I took that passion, got my certification, and Shaped Bodies Fitness became my reality. Anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? Our campers are dedicated to getting fit and staying fit. We are here to guide them along the way. It's a journey, one that we are happy to take with our campers. Business Basics Equipment: Medicine balls, kettle bells, boxing gloves, hula hoops, jump ropes, speed ladders, giant tires Students should bring: yoga mat, two hand weights, towel, water, gloves Average class length: 60 minutes Number of Staff: 1–5 Class location: Outdoors only Established: 2009 Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Guests allowed: Yes Parking: Parking lot

  • New Warrior Fitcamp
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? Each training class is varied, so the daily workout routine never actually feels "routine." Boredom can be the biggest enemy of a workout program. An even bigger enemy is being asked to train beyond your current level of fitness. We program our workout routines to fit the current fitness level of all our New Warrior class members, whether they are new to a structured training program or highly experienced athletes. Each member leaves each class with sense of accomplishment, utilized to help them take on their next training class. Training plateaus don't stand a chance at New Warrior FitCamp. What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own? Some of the biggest mistakes most people make attempting to get fit on their own [are] not knowing where they are physically at the time they begin a training program. [Another one is] following general training programs found online, in health and fitness magazines, or DVDs from late night infomercials that don't keep their personal physical attributes and limitations in mind. [That leaves] a lot of room for unwanted injuries. [Other mistakes include] having a lack of accountability. At New Warrior Fitcamp, each new class member is properly assessed before beginning our classes, is taught the proper warm up, cool down, and recovery movements to avoid injury, and is confident knowing their New Warrior classmates and coaches are their biggest support team, no matter what their training level may be. We train as a family and succeed as a family. Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts? I feel at times the style of music should reflect the style of training, the training environment, and the type/personality of clientele that make up your classes. However, there are times I find that music can also distract clients from learning proper instruction from their coach, as well as distract the trainee from being in the moment of their training. Business Basics Equipment: Dumbbells, kettlebells, sledgehammers, tractor tires, ropes, barbells Students should bring: water, weightlifting gloves, small towel Average class length: 30-60 minutes Number of Staff: 1–5 Class location: Mix of indoor and outdoor classes Established: 2005 Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Parking: Parking lot

  • Iron Sports
The year was 1975, and Sam Sann crept alongside his grandmother and sister through the untamed countryside of Cambodia. He and his family were fleeing political insurgents on foot, barely subsisting on snakes and any other sustenance they could find. After four years of wandering, the Sann clan finally made it to Houston, where Sam excelled in cross-country and track. From his post as a staffer at a gym in high school, Sam ascended to personal trainer after graduation and eventually opened Iron Sports Indoor Obstacle Course with the help of his wife, Gabby. Well-known for having a spirit more generous than the secret lovechild of Santa and a fairy godmother, Sam eagerly welcomes up to 60 visitors at a time into his unique two-story obstacle course fitness studio. Exercisers of all skill levels tether themselves to a rope belay system to surmount potholed walls with climbing pegs and then scurry through tunnels at the top of ladders. From ramps for running to monkey bars for swinging, the course offers a unique approach to wellness with fun built in. The gym also houses traditional cardio and weight machines from Precor and two First Degree Fitness Fluid Cycles XT, which are akin to a bike for the upper body. Instructors, including American Ninja Warrior veteran Drew Drechsel, have backgrounds in sports medicine and fitness, and incorporate the facility's obstacle course and gym equipment into classes such as a year-round boot camp, Kids Fit sessions, and Zumba.

  • R.A.G.E Bootcamp
What inspired you to start or run this business? I have been doing CrossFit for a couple [of] years now, and my business partner Jonathan has been personal training for a little longer. We have been friends since we were kids, and realized that we both have a passion for fitness and a healthy lifestyle. With our knowledge and experience combined, we knew that we could benefit others who are looking for direction toward fitness goals. Running the Boot Camp doesn't feel like work because we love it. What makes your business stand out? Our combination of strength, agility, [and] cardio workouts is tailored in a way that keeps everybody involved and moving, unlike your traditional everybody-stand-in-a-row-and-follow-me workouts. Also, our mix of timed and max reps brings something new [for] members who were just working out alone or with a personal trainer. What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? The customers are always excited at the insight we give them. The best reaction [was from] this client [who] was in tears the other day. She has struggled with her weight for some time, and she was glad to have coaches and group of people to encourage [her] to keep it up. She lost 20 pounds in the first month. What’s your favorite part about your job? My favorite part is designing the workouts for the day. We have been running for sometime now and have not repeated one workout.
