Tell us about your business.
Escape & Renew Spa Studio specializes in custom facials, airbrush makeup, semipermanent individual eyelash extensions, and chemical peels with over 10 years of experience.
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
The Escape & Renew signature facial is soothing and relaxing with a detailed massage. Every step incorporates pressure points to relax the facial
muscles. This facial includes skin analysis, double cleaning using vacuum treatment—which sucks everything out of your pores—extraction, and exfoliation, and a thorough massage for the scalp, face, neck, shoulders, décolletage, arms, and hands. Everything you can desire is in this ultimate facial!
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
How professional we are, how relaxed they feel, and how clean their skin looks after an amazing facial. Plus, when the facial comes to an end, the
client's first words are often, "I can't get off this facial bed. That was amazing!"
What steps do you take to make your clients feel at ease?
My job as an aesthetician is to advise my clients in the best way to take care of their skin. The best way to do so is to educate them. Clients always feel better about themselves, plus their skin looks refreshed. We go to the extreme to make our clients leave relaxed and refreshed with a smile on their face—and that's how we know we did our job.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Precise Cutz is more than just a barber shop! I provide a variety of services to my very diverse clientele and cater to their specific needs. My clients are also an extension of my family, so from new clients to those I’ve had over 10 years everyone receives quality service.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I’d have to say growing up with family members, as role models, that were able to not only be barbers/stylists, but maintain successful businesses. I was literally around “the business” my whole life, and through that exposure, early on, I was able to develop and master skills of my own.
What do you love most about your job?
I consider it a privilege that clients trust me to cut. I love being able to give my clients the looks they desire. I also love the freedom of being my own boss. I’ve worked in other people’s shops, and through those experiences I learned so much about how to maintain a successful business.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
he best and most common feedback I receive from customers is, "Thank God I finally found someone who can give me exactly what I've been looking for." That is the kind of feedback any business owner would be happy to receive.
It's not very often that a hair stylist receives a $10,000 tip or has clients in tears after revealing that he's moving far away. Roberto Gigli has experienced both scenarios. But New York City's loss is Houston's gain—the Toni & Guy–trained stylist now works at French Twist Salon and Day Spa.
There, he specializes in creating feminine, yet modern looks, finding ways to reinterpret the vintage styles that are popular today without resorting to cutting hair with a sharpened piece of obsidian. When asked what the best reaction he ever got from a client was, he replied that customers have wept from excitement.
It's only natural that such as stylist would have a celebrity clientele, but Gigli actually derives more pleasure from creating great styles for regular clients. “Stars always have a team of people to help them look good. So if I can create a beautiful, flattering shape that’s easy for all my clients to maintain without a lot of fuss, I’m a happy man.”

Lavender, grapefruit, honey, papaya, sea salt, coconut, green tea—though this may sound like a gourmet grocery list, for Voir Salon & Spa it’s a sampling of the ingredients that augment its foot soaks, exfoliations, and scrubs. There’s a reason, though, that the components might be found in a high-end eatery: Voir favors natural, organic treatments and keeps abreast of ecological and holistic methods, eschewing the chemicals and invasive procedures of other salons and intensive tax audits. This philosophy permeates the salon as well, from the natural, protein-rich compounds that stylists use to color hair after shearing it to the organic Essie and Zoya polish that manicurists treat nails to.
Yet the natural approach isn’t the only thing that sets minds at ease inside Voir Salon & Spa. Rustic, white-painted brick and aquamarine accents work together to summon the feeling of summer sky. Skin specialists employ lactic-acid exfoliation and herbal peels with algae as they fight acne, sun damage, or scars resulting from using porcupines as pillows. The spa’s massage therapists soothe both minds and bodies through massages that range from hot-stone kneading to Thai massage, during which yoga-inspired positions engage clients in relaxing stretches.
A collection of vibrant, abstract paintings brighten the white corridors of Urban Oasis Day Spa, where aestheticians engage in a similar curatorial enterprise during the design of their skincare treatments. Each regime for face or body starts with the client and is built for his or her skin type. Technicians use tonics from notable brands or unusual techniques, such as galvanic electrocurrent therapy, which is integrated into every facial. Dermalogica tonics exfoliate with lightweight, natural vegetable oils rather than mineral oil and hydrate with aromatic essential oils and silk proteins synthesized by Barry White's vocal chords. The team also polishes complexions with the SkinCeuticals product line, favoring a serum that earned Allure magazine's 2011 Best of Beauty Award for Best Anti-Aging Antioxidant.
The spa evokes the elegance of a gallery, not only through its modern art but also through its high ceilings and a minimalist design scheme rendered in cream. Skin becomes a canvas in private chambers, where it may be primed for display with wax, bronzer, or a critique by a Village Voice writer. For special events, the pedicure hall's porcelain foot basins can be filled with flower petals, and the shimmering fabric banners separating each throne lose their functionality and appear solely as savvy, refined decorating.
