RoboHullaBaloo whets the engineering appetites of scienteers ages 9–14 during Lego workshops that consist of robot constructing and programming, and end with a dramatic robo-duel. Maria Beaty helms the cyborg-crafting sessions, scooping from a vast brain barrel of expertise collected during 14 years of fine-arts teaching and three-plus years coaching the First Lego League. Students carpenter a robotic sumo wrestler out of Legos and Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0, taking inspiration from the Greek myth about the goddess who built a servant out of interlocking plastic parts.
Beaty then covers basic programming in order to help students control their miniature future warriors. Six teams of up to 10 android-animating students develop teamwork skills as they compete to create the ruling sumo-bot, winning the top three team glory and the respect of Lego men everywhere; other teams will also be rewarded for inventive endeavors. Kids should arrive with lunch, a water bottle, and a snack to fuel fast-paced inventing and cheerleading enthusiasticly enough to warm the cold heart of a sumo robot.
