About Rustic Oak
When Wendell Price cooks, he draws on both his deep roots and his world travels. Price grew up in a family of chefs, experimenting with recipes passed down from his great-great-great- (yes, three greats!) grandmother. As an adult, he worked as a maritime chef, traveling and eating widely. The menu at Rustic Oak, Price’s latest Houston brunch spot, honors both of these influences; he describes it as “French country peasant food” mixed with a “grandmother's style of cooking.” That description should be enough to make mouths water, but just in case you need something more to tempt your tastebuds, we outlined four other reasons you'll want to stop by (and show up hungry).
Reason #1: Price is a culinary celebrity.
He’s appeared on the Food Network, opened a restaurant with Denzel Washington, and catered events for the Clinton Foundation. He also wrote a cookbook, Cooking with Heart and Soul, and his “she-crab soup” is so famous it should probably have its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Reason #2: Complimentary mimosas.
Brunch is served buffet-style, which means bottomless everything... even mimosas. The spread, which Price describes as a “smorgasbord,” also includes red velvet pancakes topped with whipped strawberry butter, and deviled eggs with collard relish and fried oysters.
Reason #3: Price knows how to pair.
With a wine selection that includes 1700 different bottles, there's a perfect wine for virtually any occasion. Sundays might offer the easiest pairing, though: that's when Price and his team serve bottomless fried chicken and champagne along with their usual brunch offerings.
Reason #4: You can eat off a table made of champagne bottles.
Price built the table, and several other pieces of furniture, by hand. Other funky decor touches include art from Houston-based Kelly Devine, and the vintage building is a work of art in its own right—it was built in 1905.
