What You'll Get
With its emphasis on purging pent-up stress, yoga has given Americans a far healthier alternative to picking a fight with the Jefferson Memorial or writing strongly worded letters to Santa. Relax your mind and limbs with today’s Groupon: for $27, you get four drop-in classes at Solid Ground Yoga in Midlothian (up to a $60 value). Solid Ground Yoga schedules 15 classes per week.
With morning and evening classes scheduled seven days a week, Solid Ground offers mind and body foundational lifts for yogis of all ages and bodily rigidities in a peaceful residential studio far from the bustle of a noisy gym. Owner Wanda Castelvecchi and her studio's four certified instructors design their stretch sessions to span the entire spine-bending, sigh-inducing spectrum.
The beginning Hatha class emphasizes proper pose alignment and breathing, with plenty of verbal and hands-on correction. Bendier bodies, meanwhile, can work their way up through various intensities of Vinyasa flow to the intense power yoga, in which they can master such physically challenging asanas as the downward-facing god and the hulk smash. Solid Ground also hosts a number of specialized classes, such as Yin yoga—which focuses on long holds that stretch the connective tissues in the hips, pelvis, and lower spine—or the graceful, fluid lunar yoga, a woman- and wolfman-centric course that causes less wear and tear on the wrists and shoulders. The mirror-free studio surrounds students with natural lighting, allowing participants to boost their flexibility and strength far from the boorish catcalls of Supreme Court justices.
After the session, swap enlightenment stories with friends over a cup of hot tea, or peruse Solid Ground's environmentally friendly yoga merchandise. First-time participants are encouraged to bring their own mat and arrive 15 minutes early to check in and become acquainted with the studio and its shy but lovable canine ghost, Barkster. A completed enrollment and waiver form is required.
