The Bank Vault
It's not every day you can sip champagne in a bank vault. But you can at The Bedford, which is housed in the basement of a repurposed Wicker Park bank originally built in the 1920s. A non-descript door off Division Street leads to a staircase down into a cool, subterranean space filled with vintage relics. A huge, circular vault door serves as a de facto archway into the dining area, and in the lounge copper safety-deposit boxes glitter on the wall.
The Bedford's executive chef, Mike Galen, has developed a menu largely composed of upscale comfort food arranged into small, shareable plates. For many dishes, cooks add tasty flourishes to classic meals, such as deviled eggs sprinkled with bacon powder and macaroni and cheese mixed with crispy onion breadcrumbs.
The drink menu juxtaposes classics such as Manhattans next to updated staples such as the Blackberry Whiskey Smash, a refreshing cocktail made with bourbon, blackberries, and mint. To fit with the theme of new alternatives to tried-and-true tipples, glasses of wine complement two types of punch, and tallboys of PBR chill next to craft brews such as Fist City stout from Chicago's Revolution Brewery.
