Because baseball games are no longer used to settle land disputes and damages from horse collisions, they’ve become the battleground for deciding which U.S. city will be the first to move to the moon. Train for nation-changing showdowns with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a one-hour batting cage and pitching machine rental at The Bullpen in Bixby (a $45 value).
The Bullpen unshackles inner athletes inside its comprehensive baseball-training facility, which is outfitted with professional batting cages and Jugs pitching machines. For 60 minutes, players can swing their best bat against the sly devices of a pitcherdroid, envisioning grand slams and a real pitcher's look of defeat as all-sport padded turf cushions their cleats. L-Screens and fielder's screens protect foul balls from escaping the facility and falling into the mitts of unfriendly shortstops, and black backdrops serve to halt anything that slips past the imaginary catcher. If players get curious about ball velocity, The Bullpen can furnish a radar gun to clock pitches as they streak plateward.
In the spring of 1979, Scott Glanz faced a tough choice: attend the University of Arkansas or join the Chicago White Sox's minor-league system. Scott opted for an education, though three years later another minor-league offer arrived, this time from the then-California Angels. He accepted it but spent most of his 2.5-year minor league career tending to an injured elbow.
Rather than spend his time wondering what if?, Scott brushed off the disappointment by training the next wave of major-league hopefuls at The Bullpen. Along with fellow coaches Randy Whisler and Jimmy Kremers, Scott imparts baseball fundamentals—such as hitting, fielding, and throwing—to first-timers at The Bullpen's Rookie School. Geared toward players of all skill levels, The Bullpen's other services include personalized private lessons, batting practice inside six cages, and plenty of strength-training equipment.
