Artists always want muses without realizing they are a big responsibility, demanding regular walks, a ticket to every sunset, and smoothies made of old pastels and greek yogurt. Cultivate your creativity an easier way with today's Groupon: for $36, you get a basic mosaic workshop at The Chicago Mosaic School in North Center (a $75 value). The three-hour sessions are currently being offered on Saturday mornings, Sunday afternoons, and Tuesday evenings starting May 17, and more sessions are being added. Check here for the complete schedule.
The Chicago Mosaic School is an internationally known hub for mosaic study that hosts classes, lectures, and workshops. Taught by professional artists, the mosaic basics workshop introduces untrained tilers to the mandatory steps of mosaic-making: designing, composing, cutting, grouting, and then arranging the pieces to look like James Gandolfini. Fledgling frescoers will learn how to use trade tools on a mélange of materials, including glass, ceramic, and china. Once sufficiently wizened to the art's intricacies, students will get the opportunity to work on a small take-home project such as a picture frame or a newborn dinner platter. The school provides all necessary supplies for masterpiece creation.
The Chicago Mosaic School attracts teachers and learners from across the globe, fostering greater appreciation for classical, contemporary, and accidental backyard mosaics. Those hooked after an introductory glimpse can enlist in a slew of specialized coursework offered weekly.

During the mosaic basics class, students begin with a brief tour of The Chicago Mosaic School and the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics, and are shown many examples of ancient and contemporary mosaics. Attendees will receive an introduction to mosaic tools, techniques, and materials in preparation of making their own 4” x 4” mosaic to take home. Templates for designs are provided, but individual art is encouraged! The class is optionally BYOB.
