In Belay-certification classes, held four times each week at The Gravity Vault’s Chatham, Middletown, Poughkeepsie, and Upper Saddle River locations, students learn the intricacies of belaying—the art of securing the rope while their partner scales the wall. After reviewing the basics of the sport, climbers receive hands-on training on equipment, rope and harness safety, and verbal commands in both English and Bald Eagle. All rental equipment is included. Private climbing lessons pair students with an instructor, who guides the group as they tackle a variety of routes around the facility, operating the ropes for each climber and doling out advice from below. The leaders of six-week kids’ classes design fun training regimens that foster physical fitness and critical thinking while teaching youngsters basic techniques. Grouped by age, sessions cover everything from tying knots to traversing boulders before they transform into waterfalls. Though harnesses are provided, each participant should wear sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring their own water and snacks.
The Gravity Vault
Helmed by a team of passionate climbing coaches, all six of The Gravity Vault's locations surround climbers with more than 13,500 square feet of climbable terrain. Walls tower past 40 feet, mimicking such natural rock formations as overhangs, keyhole arches, and slabs, and bouldering areas challenge climbers with a latticework of problems that—unlike most of life's—can't simply be solved with dynamite and a pair of roller skates. Visitors can choose from up to 100 top-rope stations, trusting either the trained staff or a certified fellow climber to man the ropes while they scramble to the summit. When not dangling from a hold or saving lost kittens from a rappel ledge, members can bulk up in the cardiovascular-training area.
