What You'll Get

Eating while riding horseback was pioneered by the efficient Mongols, who also adjusted to reading, receiving haircuts, and filling out their taxes atop their four-legged mobiles. Enjoy the convenience of chairs and tables with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of eclectic American cuisine and drinks at The Independent, a comfortable lounge-style restaurant in the heart of Uptown on the second floor of Calhoun Square.

The Independent is a locally owned dining and cocktail destination boasting one of the happiest happy hours around. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day, city dwellers gather in the restaurant's chic yet casual confines to mingle over impressive daily specials, including $5 select appetizers, $5 specialty martinis, and $3 select draft beers and house wines. Pair a frothy Bells’ Two Hearted Ale tap brew ($3) with a classic Margherita pizza ($5), or wash down a chipotle-tinged plate of onion rings ($5) with a glass of crisp chardonnay ($3).

For dinner, palates are impressed with savory tastes of steak ala Oscar (8-ounce tenderloin topped with a crab cake and hollandaise sauce, served with asparagus and lemon mashed potatoes, $20), sweet chili-glazed walleye (tempura walleye, shoe-string potatoes, leek-cream sauce, and chili–Grand Marnier glaze with seasonal veggies, $14), and handmade pan-seared gnocchi with asparagus, prosciutto, and leak-cream sauce ($13). To pamper your most prized miming tools, let them hold a ham and egg burger ($10). Breakfast bites, including the Indy breakfast burrito (filled with sausage, beans, rice, corn salsa, and cheddar, $10) and delectably sweet stuffed french toast (thick slices of brioche bread stuffed with raspberries and mascarpone, $10), delight diners at all hours of the day.

The Independent's hip interior extends to large private party rooms, a lively game room equipped with a pool table, and an intimiate VIP space known as the "kissing booth." Whether looking to vivaciously flap your butterfly wings or just gently bat your lashes, the restaurant's tasty tastes and welcoming walls will ensure a satisfactory flutter.

Citysearchers and Yelpers give The Independent a 3-star rating. Thrifty Hipster gives 3.5:

  • If you're looking for something happening on any night, the Independent is usually a safe bet. – Thrifty Hipster
  • I have never had a bad time at The Independent. The crowd is always composed of eclectic (usually) good-looking people in their mid-twenties. – bajomono, Citysearch
