The Monterey Restaurant originally opened in the 1920s, and it became a staple of the OU campus. After closing in the late 60s, "The Mont," as it had come to be known, re-opened in 1976 sporting its nickname as its new, actual name. Ever since, OU students and locals alike have gathered at The Mont for its award-winning appetizers, namely the chili con queso. This renowned app blends cheese, jalapenos, green chile peppers, sausage, and spices into one glorious bowl of dip. This molten delicacy also fits naturally in other places, such as slathered across a burger or ladled into Christmas stockings. In addition to its queso, The Mont has also staked its reputation on its landscaped patio, where visitors kick back and sip on the restaurant's signature frozen sangria margaritas, dubbed Sooner Swirls.
