Lissome instructors guide students down the path of cosmic clarity in a series of quiet, intimate yoga classes designed to stretch muscle groups and eliminate mental anxieties. Mixed-level classes in a variety of yoga styles are kept small to ensure that students do not drown in a sea of contorted limbs and floating karmas. Classic yoga classes cultivate correct alignment and precise postures, and Hatha yoga accentuates the interconnectedness of breath and movement through a series of meditations and controlled breathing exercises. The Iyengar style introduces props such as sandbags, cushions, and chakra tripods to support beginners practicing advanced asana poses, and restorative yoga classes employ props and longer holds to calm intricate systems of melancholy nerves. All classes at the naturally lit studio are taught by compassionate, certified instructors with years of practical experience in classrooms and Donkey Kong tournaments.
With all props and yoga mats provided by the studio, students are encouraged to attend with loose-fitting clothes, empty stomachs, and ample chi. Part of Therapy Services Plus and named for its location above it, Yoga Upstairs elevates visitors’ spirits and fitness levels with accessible Hatha- and Iyengar-style yoga classes, as well as basic, gentle, and Vinyasa flows. Sunlight warms the bamboo floor of the practice space as seasoned teachers demonstrate movements to help strengthen muscles and center minds. Iyengar class instructors walk students through routines to open joints and cultivate stamina, and students perform restorative-yoga routines to melt stress with gentle stretches and breaths deeper than a bass solo inside a moon crater. In addition to posing on mats, students can visit the studio’s four-panel yoga wall, where sturdy straps assist inverted moves and other advanced body-weight exercises without risking injury. Like a medieval castle’s daycare center, many classes incorporate blankets, blocks, and sandbags, which help students hold their poses as they hone their alignment.
