"Wonderful Old Hotel" My family and I all live in different states, so to centralize a visit we picked Des Moines and stayed at this hotel. I was very skeptical because I read the reviews after my brother booked us rooms, but kept an open mind. It was AWESOME! This place was amazing!! If only the walls could speak! You have to look past the carpets that need replacing, chipped paint, etc. The place is beautiful! From the woodwork to the chandeliers, wow! Just think of the people from the 1920's through today that have danced in the ballrooms rode those same elevators! If you can't see how incredible this place is then you need to go stay at the local motel 6! I loved the history of this place and will make a return visit. The staff was all very nice and helpful. We did not eat in the restaurant so have nothing to say about that except the prices were up there. Check this place out if your looking for a different hotel experience and take in the architectural beauty of a building that has stood the test of time! Amazing!

Hotel needs a bit of polishing, but it was a comfortable stay I had a comfortable stay here even though the hotel is a bit worn and needs some updates and polishing. I appreciate the fact that it is a historic hotel and an older building, so even though the wallpaper needs to be replaced, painting needs to be freshened up, bed cover needs to be new, and the elevator didn't work -- it is not just another "box" hotel with small, dark hallways and trendy decor. It would be a real shame if this building was gutted so it could be more "contemporary" -- it has a grand foyer, big hallways, and a real charm. But, it still needs to be freshened up.

Worst place that I have ever stayed in! You have to park in a garage that cost $ . I went to the desk to check in and it was at that time that they told me I would have to carry my luggage and cooler up 4 flights of steps. Paint peeling off walls, stains on the curtains, carpet was absolutely aweful.....Don't stay here!

do not stay at Hotel Fort des Moines if i could give a 0 rating i would. the place is disgusting and over priced. the toilet did not flush properly, the elevators were out of service, the wifi did not work and the tv did not work, oh and the carpets looked like someone was murdered on them. the only saving grace was that most of the front desk was very nice and the poor cleaning lady was very pleasant. do not stay here if you can help it. better to stay at a motel 6

Come back in 18 months or so... I've stayed at the Hotel Fort Des Moines several times before, including in summer, and not had a problem with the room temperature until this last visit. As others have mentioned, there effectively is no AC in the rooms. When I asked at the desk about plans to fix the AC, I was told the hotel will be closing at the end of this year for complete renovations so there are no major repairs being made now. I love this building and will be watching closely for the announcement that they will be re-opening.
