The last thing I needed… The room was smelly. The tv wasn’t plugged in. It looked like someone ripped the cords out of the wall and the remote was missing. No one was at the front desk. There was a sign that directed people to the hotel next door for a front desk attendant and check ins/outs. I complained about the room and asked for another one or anything better than that one. The attendant offered to have maintenance fix the tv. I respectfully declined and asked again for a better room or even a refund. She then gave me another room. That room, the tv’s remote didn’t even match the box that was connected to the tv. The shower drain was clogged and water got up to my ankles while taking a shower. I complained about that to the attendant. She had maintenance come to the room to fix that problem. One did and it did get fixed. I’ve already been going through a financial and mental health crisis with current events in my life. And it was either a hotel or sleeping in my car.

Super 8 Hotel on East 14th St, Des Moines, IA I had an extremely disappointing stay at the Super 8 Hotel on East 14th St in Des Moines, IA. From the outset, the experience was marred by a series of issues that rendered my stay far from acceptable. Upon arrival, there was no one at the front desk. Instead, I was instructed to check in at the adjacent Baymont Hotel, which was connected to the Super 8. The Baymont also appeared poorly maintained and run down, further exacerbating the negative experience. This arrangement was not only inconvenient but also a clear sign of poor customer service. Having to walk to another hotel for check-in and assistance created a significant hassle, with staff showing little concern for addressing any problems. The room itself was in a deplorable state. It was clear that cleanliness was not a priority, as I found the room to be filthy and seemingly untouched. To my horror, there were bedbugs present—an unacceptable issue for any accommodation. The shower had mold, the water was cold, and the toilet was dirty. The overall hygiene was severely lacking. The towels in the bathroom were another significant problem—they were dirty and appeared to have been used previously without washing. Although I was provided with fresh towels upon request, the initial state of the towels and the lack of cleanliness in the room before I checked in were deeply disappointing. Additionally, despite being a non-smoking room, there was a strong smoke odor, and I found burns on the sheets. The bathroom was in poor condition, with a missing tile on the sink and multiple holes in the walls. The carpet was rough and appeared outdated. The only working appliance in the room was the fridge, which hardly compensated for the myriad of other issues. The non-functional air conditioning made the room uncomfortably humid and hot, making it very difficult to sleep. To make matters worse, the smoke alarm was non-operational, a serious fire code violation. None of the power outlets worked, forcing me to use a portable generator for my laptop and other electronic needs. This was an unacceptable inconvenience. The hotel’s free Wi-Fi was also problematic. The connection was slow, frequently dropped out, and often failed to work entirely, leaving me to rely on my mobile data hotspot—a significant additional expense and inconvenience. Breakfast options were meager, consisting of just eggs, bacon, and a gravy biscuit. This limited selection was not filling and did not meet expectations. Another downside was the lack of an elevator. While this did not personally affect me, it could be a significant issue for guests with heavy luggage or mobility challenges. Moreover, the hotel falsely advertised several amenities. The pool, which was shown on their website, was drained and looked neglected. The room was also advertised as having a sleeper sofa, but it only had a king-sized bed and a couch—no sleeper sofa as claimed. The service throughout my stay was abysmal. Despite being there for 6 nights, no effort was made to address or rectify any of the problems, including the non-working TV. The maintenance person who came to inspect it was unhelpful, suggesting I tamper with the back of the TV myself. His unprofessional behavior and failure to address other issues, such as the broken air conditioning, only added to my dissatisfaction. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, with dirty and rough sheets. They were so bad that I ended up buying my own sheets from a nearby Walmart. I discarded them after my stay due to the poor condition of the bed and mattress. As the cheapest hotel in the area for my needs, it was clear that the old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. I would have preferred to spend more on a better-quality hotel. Overall, my stay at the Super 8 Hotel on East 14th St was deeply disappointing. The poor check-in procedures, inadequate service, and numerous room issues lead me to strongly advise against staying here. If I could give 0 stars, I would. It was an experience I would not recommend to anyone.

Unpleasant Experience Our room did not have a working tv, air conditioning unit was leaking water, and the floor was wet. Bugs in room and smelled musty. No room service while there. No pool or breakfast as stated. No customer service at front desk. Had to go to Baymont for everything. They just smiled and nodded when asking to change room or price. We travel several times a year and this was worst. We feel we were not listened to or cared about our situation. We had no alternative but to stay since we traveled many hours. For $99.45 a night, this was a complete let down. Worst stay and will not recommend or stay again. We have always patronized Super 8s but not rethinking.
