Great Service and Quiet Location This hotel is in a great location in New Town -- about five blocks from Princes Street, mostly uphill, but easily walkable. It's very quiet and on a pretty street. If you want a formal English hotel experience with butlers serving your breakfast, this is your place. I usually prefer a more casual environment, but the service was excellent and friendly, so it was okay with me. It was not cheap, but nothing in Edinburgh is. We stayed in the cottage which was off an alley behind the hotel. The outside was absolutely charming, but the inside was modern. It was well equipped, but not luxurious. Downstairs there was a living/dining room with a twin bed, kitchen and a very nice full bath. Upstairs was a bedroom with second bath. The upstairs bathroom, was small but had a fantastic shower. This was more than I normally like to spend, but it was a great place to get over jetlag.

Great location but shabby Convenient location. I received a very prompt response to my initial email about room choices. We picked one of the larger rooms with a shower. Size was good and the bed was comfortable. Staff was very personable. Hotel needs a major update. Warm nights are a problem since only cooling comes from open windows. Breakfast in the dining room was adequate but nothing special. Included room service breakfast was nice the day we had an early flight. Will look elsewhere if we return to Edinburgh.

Revisit Having stayed before at the Howard and being blown away by the experience we were just slightly disappointed. Still a fab place to go and will certainly return again. We stayed in the Cockburn suite which was lovely in good proportion, however for a 5 star experience and price more attention to detail is required. The curtains had huge cobwebs on them. Staying on a Sunday or Monday night the restaurant is closed and having booked for a birthday we would rather have dined in. Breakfast was good although no Arbroath smokies as advertised on the menu. Had a kipper instead and I will no not to have again.

Lovely traditional hotel I came here as a last minute booking with my partner and we weren't disappointed with our decision. We shared a huge bedroom and bathroom, the service was exceptional and cocktails excellent. It only dropped a star on slightly tired decor and average food. I would come again.

Great Return Visit Return weekend family stay and as before thoroughly enjoyable. Again in the Mews which is great for the five of us. Special mention to the breakfast waiter (who's name I do not know) for his welcoming, obliging and attentive way
