Not a nice place! We stayed in unit 4303. For starters, everything except the microwave oven is old. The view is totally interrupted by the construction site between the unit and the ocean. To make matters worse, the sliding glass door & windows had so much dirt caked on them that it looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years. I tried to clean the slider 3 times before it was moderately clean. They were filthy! Additionally, The way they blocked off the patio looks terrible. The toilets are loose. The staircase flooring creaks and cracks really loud. The lighting is dim. The unit is way away from the water. The mattresses are really old, lumpy, and super stiff. The paint on the shower pan is peeling off and looks terrible. The bathrooms are right out of the 70's....old & tired!

Avoid this place. Apartment 4204. Great location, beds were comfortable, but no direct light in second bedroom. The second bedroom was like a cave even in the middle of the day. Air conditioning struggled to cool the place. No air conditioning in bedrooms. Shower in second bedroom didn’t work. Looks like it had been disabled by owners. Sliding doors wouldn’t lock so you had to take all important belongings with your when you went out. TV and entertainment system didn’t work. Definitely give this place a wide berth.

STAY AWAY FROM #1309 Two stars for the view and proximity to the water -that is it. My family of four stayed in #1309 -it was the worst accommodations I have ever stayed in while in Hawaii (we go to Kauai about every two to three years). The issues with this unit are as follows: Kitchen: counter-top tiles cracked, dishwasher control panel broken off (someone tried to superglue it), original cabinetry (warped and hard to open). Living/Dining Room: the permanent resident that lives below smokes cigarettes and has yappy dogs -you can smell the putrid smoke when on the lanai and in the living room, decor and furniture is atrocious with a pleather/chrome/glass dinette set (looks like Dr. Evil donated it) the decor is almost like five different people own this condo and each person has put their touch into decorating. Main Bedroom: queen size mattress with king size headboard, dresser is white lacquer with fake stainless steel accents, nightstands are Cabbage Patch doll-sized (I'm not kidding), have to move one nightstand in order to close the bedroom door for privacy, no iron (but there is an ironing board -I had to borrow the clothes iron from my sister-in-law in unit 1201), too much random bedding and boxes stored in the closet to hang your clothes, ceiling fan/light is crystal and chrome with tiny fan blades (does nothing to move the air around) also cannot have light on in main bedroom and off in back bedroom as both ceiling fan/lights are identical -the remote controls are the same! Nothing says tropical paradise more than crystal and chrome ceiling fans -geesh! Main bathroom has the original cabinetry -warped and hard to open, white toilet seat on tan colored toilet (classy!). Back Bedroom: king size bed turn into two twin beds, broken glass in picture frame hanging above bed, again the ugly white lacquer dresser and nightstands, no storage in closet (ladder, boxes, random bedding). Back bathroom: original cabinetry. Laundry Room/Half-Bath: broken spoke on beach umbrella that somebody tried to superglue (Why keep it? Just chuck it!), no clothes drying rack, dryer top that looks as if it was used as a sacrificial alter with all the nasty rust marks. I have stayed in older condos with older tropical decor, which is perfect!; the older decor and units are well maintained. However, this condo is like vomit with five different decorating ideas thrown in with some trashy chrome furniture. I have no idea how they even rent this unit! It's almost as if someone wants to own a condo in Hawaii, but can't afford to; so they have to rent it out and furnish is with a bunch of random and cheap decor and furniture they found on the clearance shelves and Ikea and Home Goods. STAY AWAY FROM #1309!!!!

Not at all as expected No air conditioning, was hot. Old building with old appliances. nice ocean and pool view was the only good thing. Not worth for the money I paid. We were charged a cleaning fee of $250 I didn't know of as it was in a small print in the email

Sufficient unit -2308 We stayed at Makahuena for 7 nights at the end of November/start of December 2019. Our unit had a great view, pool front and ocean view. The unit itself had everything we needed for our stay, including beach toys, chairs, snorkel gear, boogie boards, etc. The ocean air does a number of some of that stuff, as straps easily snapped on the beach chairs if not extremely careful, just from standard wear and tear. I was slightly mislead from the photos on our Airbnb booking, just in the sense that the photos made the unit seem MUCH nicer and bigger and newer then it was in person. Not that it wasn’t great still, I just had different expectations based on the photos, so was slightly (5%) disappointed in that. Again, it was still lovely, and had I gone in with lower expectations it would have been just fine! Lastly, the unit had some bug issues, nothing crazy, but if you left even one tiny bread crumb on the counter, it would be swarmed by super tiny ants within the hour, so just need to be super vigilant with keeping thing super clean and tidy. The location of the Makahuena units is awesome, especially if you have young kids. If gives you the option of a pool, as well a 10/15minwalk to Poipu Beach which is a super kid friendly beach with a rock wall that breaks the waves. Poipu beach itself commonly has sea turtles or sea lions perched on shore and there was even a small shark sighting (nothing to worry about said the lifeguards). There were people from all walks of life staying at Makahuena, from a young group guys, to families, to couples and older folks. I would stay here again.
