Beautiful coastal location! We chose this place on the recommendation of friends. This review was written at the end of June, two weeks after California “re opened” after the pandemic. Upon our arrival, we were greeted at the lobby door by a large chalkboard stating masks must be worn in the lobby and all public spaces. This was a bit confusing as the mask mandate in California had been lifted 10 days earlier and we had just visited Healdsburg where mask policies were almost non-existent. Nevertheless, they were pretty consistent in reminding people to wear their masks. We stayed in cottage/cabin/ room #58 and found it very comfortable. The bathroom is separated from the sleeping area by two very heavy wooden doors. We left one door closed most of the time. This also helped reduce the glare into the mirror from the sliding doors. There were plenty of amenities to the room like a Keurig coffee maker, a mini fridge (which had not been turned on so I’m not sure the creamers in there were safe to use), toiletries, a s’mores kit, a bottle of wine and two glasses (part of our package), robes and slippers (delivered upon request), and a nice balcony with chairs and an enclosed fireplace. The bed was comfortable and there were pillows of varying degrees of softness and size. Plenty of closet space and drawers for our three night stay. We found the duvet to be too warm and a requested blanket was delivered promptly making the next two night more comfortable. Because of the timing of the pandemic, the dining room had just reopened for breakfast and limited dinner, three days before our stay. They were severely understaffed but the servers were friendly and apologetic. The wait to be seated was about 10 minutes, longer for others. There was also substantial delay between being seated and placing the order and receiving the food. There was a good variety of items to order: omelets, pancakes, french toast and eggs along with juice, coffee, toast and oatmeal. Food was also available for take out. Also, “because of Covid” they did not have daily housekeeping, just deep cleaning between guest stays. If additional towels or wash tags or blankets were needed, a quick text to guest services brought them quickly! Because of this, the $20 per day “resort fee” was kindly waived during our stay. The grounds are beautiful and may get more use when the weather warms up. Corn hole, horse shoes and fire pits with chairs are placed around the property. There is a small trail around the edge by the ocean that is very scenic and easy to walk! There is plenty of free parking, a gym, and a cocktail bar. Mendocino is a unique California coastal city to explore. Heritage House makes a great home base!

Great potential that seems to be struggling with drought and COVID While the location is fantastic and the property is spacious, it seemed to be struggling with maintenance and staffing, beyond the post COVID norm. The green property on the website is mostly browned and dusted by the drought. They didn't serve breakfast or dinner in the restaurant mid week. Finally, our and others rooms had maintenance issues that showed the room's age. One tip: Most rooms had views of the sea in some way. I wouldn't pay a premium for ocean view for that reason, and the summer fog that is the ultimate limiter of that view.

Resort in a beautiful location that needs “refreshing” This is a resort that is coasting on its former reputation at this point. When we arrived we were greeted by a man at the desk who seemed put upon, especially when I asked him if our room was on the bluff overlooking the ocean as I had requested when making the reservation. He told me that he wasn’t sure what I meant, but told me our room had a great view. I let that go, as it was clear he was not going to be helpful. Our room was not where we had requested, but it was spacious and had a decent view. Otherwise, it was a totally unexceptional room for the price we were paying. I would describe the room as spartan at best. There was not one decorative element in the room. No art on the walls, in an area known for its art, no color as everything was in neutral colors, not even a throw pillow on the beds. The lighting was terrible both in the room and bathroom. Not even a magnified cosmetic mirror on the wall that you would expect in a resort like this. The windows needed to be washed and the outside of all of the cottages need a paint job. This is a resort that has a lot of deferred maintenance and needs some love and someone with an eye for design to update the interiors of the rooms and public spaces. The pandemic has clearly affected the property, but it appears that the current owners are simply not paying attention and just letting things go. The dining room is equally disappointing. Service is inattentive and the menu is expensive and mediocre. We ate at restaurants in Mendocino, which are far superior. We’ve been to Heritage House several times, but not in the last several years. We definitely won’t go back again until they have put some money into renovating and updating the resort, which is clearly long overdue.

"Rustic" Dump The physical property had stage 4 neglect and deferred maintenence despite having a "Billionaire" owner. Nearly nothing including the phone in our room, worked. The casement windows didn't have cranks and therefore couldn't be opened. Wooden decking was dry rotted, splintered and in terrible repair. VERY limited menu with expensive offerings which were poor quality and poor tasting. Grossly understaffed. Zero maid service. I actually can't think of anything this dump can do right. We were scheduled for three days but are leaving tomorrow morning, a day early. Run don't walk. Google search the history of this Hotel and you'll learn it was recently closed for 5 years, and it looks like it. Not charming but a dump.

Beautiful Location, Short on Qualified Staff This unique property is one of the most beautiful on the U.S. pacific coast. Unfortunately it has been hard hit by the Covid pandemic. We have visited many times in the past. We understood and accepted some of the limits in June: Cleaning only between guests, paper and plastic cups in the room, limited menu etc. If you are going to visit I would wait a month or so to see if they can drum up some help. The breakfast waiters seemed slightly inexperienced, but they made up for that in graciousness and willingness to accommodate. They were certainly a lot more friendly than the women at the front desk who acted like guests are a basic nuisance to be tolerated. The friendly bar staff is serving pizza and salads which were ok, but we nearly froze to death with all the doors open. Maybe that is a Covid rule. Anyway I do hope by the end of summer they will again be a five start resort, because they aren't there now. Meanwhile there are other places to stay.
