Pleasantly surprised We decided to give this motel a try and were pleasantly surprised about the rooms. The rooms appear to have been recently renovated. The rooms are clean. The walls look like freshly painted. There is tile in the bathroom and wood grain vinyl planks on the floor like in medical offices. The highlight of the room is a large wood combination shelving, dresser, desk ensemble that is very attractive. Our room with a king bed also had a unique oval love seat that is comfortable lying on sideways, too deep for normal sitting without pillows behind. It is in an excellent location with stores, gas and restaurants right outside. The lobby and breakfast are nothing special, but that is not important to us. This is now our go to place for staying Maquoketa.

Unexpected charges Nice they are pet friendly however, there is an extra free which was NOT published on their website. This fee was charged to my credit card several days AFTER I left. Attempted to discuss with staff for either partial refund or full since this was not posted; told several times I would be credited for this charge & it never happened. Aside from this, location was convenient & facility relatively clean but noisy.

Double charged and after six months they still won't provide a refund In July 2022 I booked two rooms on the Econo Lodge website, Room A was prepaid for $104.73 and Room B was cancellable. Four days before my trip I called the motel and cancelled the cancellable room. I stayed there one night on August 6, 2022 and even took the key to the front desk the next morning and they said nothing. Ten days later I noticed on my credit card statement that I had been charged $106.40 for the night I stayed, even though I had prepaid the room. I called the motel and he said he would get back to me. I have contacted them six times and have only twice had a response. They clearly don't want to do the right thing and correct their mistake. I would avoid this motel!

Stay Turned Out Fine, Despite Negative First Impression I stayed at the EconoLodge (1019 W. Platt St., Maquoketa, IA 52060) in room #219 on the one night of Tuesday, 2 August 2022. The motel is a couple of blocks off one of the major Iowa highways. The motel had an appealing exterior and lobby. The parking lot was rather beat up. The elderly gentleman who checked me in was cordial but a bit hard to understand. He didn't ask for the credit card that I'd used for the reservation; I got my receipt upon asking for it at checkout. My room was around back, slightly uphill, and actually on the first floor (I never quite understood the motel's unique layout; it's on a hill, so the second floor is equivalent to a first floor). The hallway floors were dark wood paneling. The room key slid in to the lock. The room was VERY dark. The bare wooden floor was dark and scuffed, which gave an absolutely terrible first impression. The room door gently fell open, not closed, which was a plus when trying to drag luggage in. The old-style air conditioner's "high cool" setting was more like "low cool," but ultimately effective. The queen (?) bed had 3 pillows. Despite 3 lamps, the room was still dim. Other furniture (mostly rather worn) included a low dresser + mirror, flat-screen TV, mini fridge/freezer, coffeemaker, desk + non-rolling chair, extra chair, nightstand, room phone, and suitcase rack. There were MANY electrical outlets (a plus). The bathroom was clean, and so compact that the toilet needed to have a round seat. The 2 bath towels, 3 hand towels, & 3 washcloths appeared to be new. The bath towels weren't much thicker than those at other budget motels, but these were longer than usual (a plus). Provided toiletries were 2 small soaps, shampoo, lotion, and (a plus) conditioner. Water pressure in the sink & shower was excellent. The hair-dryer didn't work. The sink was triangular in a corner, which made shaving interesting The bed was OK, and I slept acceptably. Pluses were the bathroom linens/amenities, low cost of the night's stay, and the water pressure. Minuses were the depressing room floor and condition of the parking lot. I can understand an unwillingness to want to mess with carpeting, but the room floor needs to be something other than scuffed bare wood. My standard for judging motels is, "Could I stay here happily for a full week?" The answer here is "Probably for more than one night but less than a week." It was fine for my one night.
