A fond "Goodbye" to what was once the best restaurant in the world I was sad to hear, yesterday, that Alain Chapel has closed down.
I don't suppose many people will read this as there are few reviews below mine. Alain Chapel was, during Mr Chapel's lifetime, probably the best restaurant in the world. I visited often back in the 1980's, usually with different, special girlfriends while en route to the South of France and once with my parents. Then, after a gap of 12 years, I revisited in 1998, with the wonderful lady who I have since married. While she was visiting the loo, the legendary Maitre 'd, Herve Duronzier, one of the best ever (his style lives on through Diego of the Waterside Inn in Bray who is equally fantastic) came up to me and said, "You have brought some beautiful young ladies to Alain Chapel in the past but the lady you are with tonight is by far the most remarkable and lovely." I didn't even know he had remembered me after 12 years. What a guy.
Alain Chapel has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has ever worked at this Palace of Excellence and best wishes for the future. It has been a great experience for everyone. I doubt anyone who ever visited during the lifetime of Monsieur Chapel will forget just how much they enjoyed their experience. Alain Chapel has his place in the history of French cuisine and those who knew him will all remember him as a terrific guy who achieved what few will ever replicate, with Alain Chapel in Mionnay.
