17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant

Repeat Visit to an "Old Friend" - 17 Hundred 90 Inn I have stayed at the 17 Hundred 90 Inn several times over the past 30 years. Overall, I had an enjoyable stay, but there were some "new" drawbacks to it. I was told at check in that ownership had changed a few years ago. The front desk and lobby area are only open from 10AM to 10PM. (this MAY be temporary, as it is the "off season" currently) One cannot access the lobby at all after 10PM (a door-sign warns of alarms and police), and guests must use a locked side door to get to one's room. The staff were all gracious and helpful, but I have never stayed at an inn with no after-hours staffing. - and no coffee in the morning! Parking is limited and charged separately at check-in. "Grumpy" - the doorman" helped me get parked, handled the luggage, and escorted me to my room. He was not grumpy at all! The room was as expected; clean and in order. The in-room coffee service is a bit dated, the coffee bad, and the internet was intermittent. The carpet was past its prime, but it IS an antique motif. So that is not important to me, personally. Paper or plastic cups and tissues should be considered for the bathroom, as well as a larger waste basket. There was no hot water at 8AM on my first morning, but the issue did not reappear on my 3-night stay. The air conditioning kept up with the stifling heat outside, and there was an oscillating fan available as well. There was an in-room refrigerator, and streaming TV. The pub off of the lobby opened at 4PM each day and was a lively spot for locals and pub crawls; Great drinks and great bartenders. The 17 Hundred 90 restaurant, also off of the lobby, is excellent, and rates among my top ten in Savannah. Try the rack of lamb! I would definitely consider this inn on a return visit to Savannah, but wish the staff hours were longer, and coffee made available in the lobby...:-)

A Ghostly Hotel We stayed in Room 204 “Anna’s Room” for 3 nights. The room is up 2 flights of stairs and there is no elevator. The room was very cozy and quiet. Anna made her presence known to us by moving a hand towel I had on the sink into the cabinet underneath the sink and she placed another hand towel in my suitcase underneath clothes that I hadn’t even touched or moved since we got there. There are 2 other ghosts that haunt this motel other than Anna…Thaddeus who leaves dimes lying in the restaurant and tavern, and another ghost that haunts the kitchen. There is a courtyard out back for smokers and it’s really nice to just sit out there and talk to other patrons and employees. The staff is wonderful and can give you information on anything in the historic district. They are very helpful. There is parking in the back and parking is $15 a night which is cheap compared to the other motels. The restaurant is also wonderful and they give you a free drink voucher with your stay. We did make reservations for dinner the last night. We will definitely stay here again each time we come to Savannah.

Double charged for a drink and owner refuses to deal with it We enjoyed our stay at the inn on our way home from Florida. We had a drink in the bar and then dinner at the hotel. Unfortunately we were charged twice for our drink at the bar. We advised the hotel who saw the double charge and said the owner had to deal with it. The owner has been a complete jerk about dealing with this charge of $30 USD. He can only provide us with one bill and has tried to photocopy the charger so it appears as two charges. He has also stonewalled American Express as they to get to the bottom of this. It is truly unfortunate but if this is the owners attitude we will never stay there again

Fabulous, quaint Inn My girlfriend and I stayed at 17Hundred90 for a long weekend in Savannah. It was reasonably priced compared to some of the other hotels in the Historic North District and also had a charm to it that modern hotels don't offer. We were given a complimentary pass for 2 drinks from the bar o the ground floor, which was very kind of them. We enjoyed the drinks after getting settled in our room and we ate at their restaurant, also on the ground floor, later that night. The menu is not large but the food was excellent! We stayed in Room 101, which was quaint but not overly gaudy. It was equipped with a decent SmartTV, a dorm fridge and a small coffee maker. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom sufficed for our needs. We didn't experience anything paranormal during our stay; it was quiet and relaxing when we retired for the night. Note that the "1xx" rooms are actually on the second floor and require stairs to access. "2xx" rooms are on the third floor and are accessible by stairs inside the building once you get inside. The location makes it very easy to walk to nearby eateries or the waterfront. Broughton and Congress Streets have lots of shops and music venues, as well as a few blocks further away at the waterfront. You could probably stay a little closer to the "action" but there's a price to pay for that! So, for the cost, the 1790 is a great location. The inn has somewhat limited and tight parking at the rear of their property. We paid $15/day but I believe you'd have to pay for parking about anywhere else, whether at a garage on the street, so it's not a big expense. It was convenient having our car nearby, although we didn't use it from the time we arrived to the time we left! ALL of the staff were absolutely fantastic! Very warm and receiving and quite helpful with a couple of our requests. Note that their Main Desk is only open from 10AM-10PM, so outside of those hours, you're sort of on your own. Also note that you are supplied with a key to enter the building and one for your room, so it's very important to not lose those if you are going to be leaving and coming into the building after 10PM or before 10AM! If you are looking for a fairly-priced, quaint and accessible location (which may include some other guests!), in Savannah, I would definitely recommend the 1790!

Unbeatable location I had room 307 across the street from the main hotel. I think I was the only person in the three story building for 3 days. The decor is quirky but nice. The room(s) need serious cleaning/updating. Lots of dust under the bed and in the room corners. Closing for a weekend and doing a deep cleaning and paint job would work wonders. There is onsite parking at $15/day which is a bargain in Savannah. The staff is very pleasant. I ate once at the on-site pub which is always very busy. They're on the Haunted Savannah tour circuit and while I was in the pub they had 10(!) groups come through. The location can't be beat. Quiet residential area. As usual in Savannah I left my car parked and walked everywhere. Across town to the Telfair Gallery it was barely a 10 minute walk. All in all it was adequate for the price point. The main draw for me was the location.
