Legend has it that Clyde Bailey escaped from a mental ward in 1996, and while he's never been apprehended, the rumors of his presence in and around a dilapidated home haven't ceased in almost 20 years. Every October, daring and brave adventurers form a line to enter his rumored abode, seemingly undeterred by the fact that Clyde had been put away for mangling at least 37 people and strewing the body parts all over his family farm. Some of his victims were members of Clyde's own family, yet no one knows what inspired his bloody rampage—other than the voices in his head, of course. Clyde's story plays out at House of Screams and Wicked Dreams, a haunt that began as a humble neighborhood affair built in the driveway of the founders' home. Year by year, the haunt grew and finally, in 2014, the organizers moved it from that driveway into a location of its very own. But despite its countless horrrors, the haunt also has a lot of heart: a portion of the proceeds from the event benefit Bosom Buddies of Arizona and Alice Cooper's The Rock Teen Center.

  • Golfland Fright Nights
Though the medieval era was undoubtedly exciting, with its jousting matches and knightly errands, King Arthur's castle could have done with a few upgrades—namely, a laser-tag arena. King Ben's Castle at Golfland Sunsplash has modernized its interior to include just that. During games of Lazer Knights, players dart between glowing columns to target enemies on the opposing team, blending science-fiction and fantasy into one intense competition. The castle is also host to a sprawling arcade with more than 200 games. And, instead of a protective moat, its grounds are home to a water park and several family-friendly attractions. Three separate mini-golf courses challenge putters to sink their shots between colorful obstacles, while go-karts vie for first place on the Fastcar Raceway and bumper boats jostle their water volcano-sprayed riders. May through September, guests careen down slides in Sunsplash water park, including The Revolution—a nearly seven-story slide that culminates in an open bowl, sending raft riders into dizzying circles. Entire families can board a raft for the three thrilling drops of Thunder Falls, whereas the Lazy River carries swimmers on a lackadaisical journey atop inner tubes. There's also an enormous wave pool, which recreates the feeling of riding swells on a choppy ocean more authentically than asking someone to shake your bathtub.

  • Wet n Wild Phoenix
The scorching Arizona sun beats down on Adobe Dam Regional Park, but visitors to Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix keep cool as they splash throughout more than 30 waterslides and attractions. The 35-acre facility is home to an abundance of adrenaline-pumping rides—including a towering tandem water coaster, a spiraling 45-foot funnel, and a four-story six-lane speedway—to contrast its more laid-back attractions, including an interactive playground and 450,000-gallon wave pool. The junior water park accommodates younger guests with kid-friendly funnels, rivers, and racing slides. Food and beverage carts traverse the grounds, while an onsite restaurant, cafes, and pubs fuel fun with full meals, snacks, and drinks. • Pump It Up Scottsdale
Pump It Up's indoor inflatable arenas launch socked striplings into the air with a plethora of kid-friendly bounce pads. Staffers supervise fun-filled visits, during which adult counterparts leap around with their kids through gargantuan bounce houses, skip down air-filled slides, and slither like snakes covered in bacon grease through an inflated obstacle course. Occasionally, the staffers switch off the lights, arming the roomful of players with glow sticks and bracelets as they navigate the air-cushioned obstaclescape. The colorful venue also hosts custom birthday parties and private team parties, each themed to please the partygoers in question. These fiestas immerse children in a schedule of interactive activities befitting a pirate or a superhero while melting off youthful energy faster than ice cubes thrown into a running DVD player. The birthday boy or girl even gets to blow out the candles on their cake seated in their blow-up throne. Relying on the staffers' vigilant, watchful eyes, guardians can rest assured that their charges will stay safe, and each piece of the inflatable playground is held to the wall by a complex series of anchors installed according to strict safety standards.
