  • barbershop society
The Detroit Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society was born on July 30, 1939, when 20 men with extraordinary vocal talent gathered in a cottage on Lake Orion to apply for their official charter and probably make some s'mores. By their second meeting, the group had grown to 50 singers, and less than a year later they staged a show featuring eight barbershop quartets. It was the very first of the Chapter's Parade of Harmony shows, an annual tradition that lives on today. When the Oakland Chapter formed in 1941, the two chapters entered a period of lively competition, but ultimately merged in the late '80s to form a true supergroup. Despite its change in name, the Detroit-Oakland Chapter continues to share a love of barbershop-style music with the community.

  • Saudades do Brasil
From its many violinists to its lone contra bassoonist, the heart of the Macomb Symphony Orchestra is 70 musicians strong. The pulse, however, is Thomas Cook. The conductor of the MSO for nearly 40 years, Cook also serves as its music director, programming evenings that range from the classically sublime to the delightfully unexpected—such as the 2014–2015 season's Music '70s Style. While their size helps them bring dynamic works such as Carmina Burana to life, they don't merely travel in packs. Chamber ensembles, such as string quartets and flute and harp duos, travel throughout the community to brighten weddings, bring classical music to schools, and give spies fitting theme music.

  • Comedy Quarry
Hecklers beware: Rockhead Pub's Comedy Quarry doesn't like you. The venue embraces comedians and the audiences who love them, but will use a giant stage hook to remove anyone who attempts to ruin the night with their own untested musings. Because of this, crowds can bask in the sharp witticisms of regional, national, and international stand-ups without interruption. The club gives back in other ways, too—it hosts fundraising shows for local charities and Twitter caption contests for its followers.

  • Switek Entertainment
In the curtained-off confines of a photo booth, revelers adjust a digital screen’s controls, then mug for the camera wrapped in feather boas, eyes obscured behind sunglasses. The props and the booth come courtesy of Switek Entertainment, whose photo booths and chief disc jockey—who spins under the name DJ Switek—energize crowds at Michigan wedding receptions and parties. The company also draws on connections to other area businesses, matching hosts with party essentials, such as guests who can put their hands in the air for the entire duration of an event.
