  • CrossFit SW Beaverton
Some athletes train for a specific type of fitness. Olympic weightlifters, for example, concentrate solely on their muscle power, and, thus, wouldn't fare well in a long-distance race, just as most marathoners probably don't perform many clean-and-jerks or bench-press compact cars. But most people are not Olympic weightlifters or professional marathoners. For the general population, a more general approach to fitness is what yields long-term health and wellness. That's why CrossFit SW Beaverton's members might participate in both power and endurance exercises—as well as calisthenics, gymnastics, and sprints—in a given Workout of the Day. The gym's certified coaches devise these ever-changing daily regimens to deliver results in a variety of fitness categories. Exercisers can then take these attributes into other areas of life that require fitness and commitment, such as raising children, staying active into old age, and protecting the family thumb-wrestling title belt.

  • The Inferno
The designers of The Freeze Obstacle Race don't let icy weather get in the way of an extreme endurance race. Participants kick off the 4–5-mile course regardless of the temperature, encountering over 25 obstacles such as hills, monkey bars, tire carries, and walls on their way across the rugged and often muddy Oregon terrain. The toughness of the race requires entrants to be in good shape, but competitors who think one loop is too easy can opt to complete two passes during a Double Loop Challenge, or as many laps as they can over the course of ten hours during the Max Out Challenge.

  • CrossFit Excellence
Equipment: CrossFit, strongman, boxing, top-of-the-line functional equipment Students should bring: Water bottle, towel, fitness attire Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Average class length: 60 minutes Number of Staff: 5–10 people Class location: Mix of indoor and outdoor classes Established: 2004 Guests allowed: Yes Parking: Parking lot Pro Tip: Let your coach know of any injuries or concerns before class starts. Q&A with Cody Limbaugh, Owner/Fitness Director Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? We provide personal guidance for your goals, including nutrition, scaling, and exercise modification. But the real secret to your success is our community of supportive students and mentors. We foster a welcoming, family-like atmosphere, infused with humor, challenge and encouragement. Our gym is a place you'll look forward to, and that will empower you with the motivation to succeed. What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own? The biggest mistake I see people make is searching for short-cuts, gimmicks or easy results. Of course fitness can be simple, but simple isn't necessarily easy. I see too many people go from one method to the next without allowing proper time for success. Find what works for you, and make small adjustments from there. Consistency is the key. What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student? We constantly vary our workouts so you'll never get bored and you'll be less likely to plateau or over-train. So every session looks a little different. However, some consistent features of our sessions include a general warm-up followed by guided mobility and stretching. Then we move on to a coached skills learning session and a workout of the day (WOD) with strength training and metabolic conditioning. Sessions conclude with a cool-down and mobility, along with goal-tracking and social time. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? As we enter our 10th year of training, we were originally one of only a few Portland area CrossFit gyms, back before most people had ever heard of CrossFit. We are also expanding our accessibility to become Portland's first and only 24-hour CrossFit gym. Our veteran coaches boast decades of combined training experience, to provide each individual the guidance they need to be safe, confident and successful, regardless of injuries or current fitness level. As of this spring, our new location is housed within a 60,000-square-foot warehouse, yet we maintain hands-on and community driven classes by capping most of them at only 12 students. We also offer more than just CrossFit. We have workshops devoted to boxing, strongman techniques, yoga, and endurance. Students may take advantage of open-gym time outside of class, as well as personal training sessions.
