  • Velo Cult
The journey toward founding Velo Cult wasn't easy, but according to owner and bike enthusiast Sky, it was worth the effort. With a name taken from the French word for "bike" and an abbreviation of the word culture, Velo Cult certainly lives up to its intent: the multi-use space is at once a bike shop, bar, cafe, and special events venue. A dozen taps dispense a weekly-changing roster of local and regional craft brews, which are served alongside more than 40 brews in cans and bottles. At the coffee bar, baristas prepare blends from four different roasters in the pour-over style. This attention to detail and multi-use focus aren't Velo Cult's only unique attributes: the design reflects a quirky sensibility as well. The bar contains a communal table crafted from an old bowling lane, while the showroom features a folding stage made from a re-purposed 80 year-old wooden drawbridge. This platform is lowered several nights a week for live music, except during sieges. In the same space, a 100-inch projection screen showcases films and documentaries throughout the year. Velo Cult also contains its own museum, which features complete bikes from Sky's personal collection.

  • Quaking Grass
After spending time in Quaking Grass's furnished loft studio, you learn why some of the yoga, Zumba, and holistic-dance instructors refer to the space as their "big living room." Once inside the studio, you find yourself in a sprawling, high-ceilinged loft. Natural light spills in from tall windows and onto green walls, where African art and decorative Asian fans hang. Scanning the room, you see plush furniture, a kitchenette, and a massive Native American dream catcher, painted white and hanging 6 feet to the floor. Quaking Grass is home to the Healing Arts Collective; many of its members left positions as businesspeople, teachers, and lawyers in favor of a more relaxed lifestyle. According to director Heather Straube, they each felt called to help others through techniques such as massage, yoga, and dance. Instructors lead students through progressive poses in Vinyasa yoga, dances set to Latin and Caribbean beats in Zumba, and blends of meditative martial arts and freeform movement in Earthquake Ecstatic and Nia dance. Though they guide some classes step-by-step, instructors emphasize free exploration over adhering to a strict routine—reminding students that they can meditate silently, pair off with partners, or dance alone to practice leading and following at the same time. Once each month, Quaking Grass's members also host an open community clinic, experimental salon, and potluck. Practitioners stationed throughout the space introduce curious guests to basics of tarot-card reading, massage, hypnosis, quantum touch, and a host of other holistic methods—with the hope that visitors, like babies balancing their first checkbooks, experience something new. Individual members, artists, or community practitioners may also lead workshops or lectures explaining their craft.

  • Capoeira Angola Palmares
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We have been practicing Capoeira in Portland Oregon since 1992. Because the base of the strategy is more thorough we choose to train under the guidance of Grande Mestre Nô (Norival Moreira de Oliveira) wiki him. "Mestre dos mestre dos mestres" We work with his student Mestre Gulliver. What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans? Where all white comfortable clothes. Tuck in the shirt: How easily does it fall out. You're going to want to be able to generally see. Drink plenty of water the day before class, and the day of class. Wrap any injured or recovering joints with support wrap and athletic tape. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? Mestre Nô's style of Capoeira Angola inspired me. The Music is more robust. The context for keeping score over a particular requirement of guile for each beat combination I found very intriguing. The proper game of "Apanha l'ranja do chao tico tico" is not played by any other groups in Portland. What do you love most about your job? I love seeing people be able to find something they didn't know they already do well, and helping them successfully incorporate this into their intuitive capoeira angola game play.

  • The Circuit Bouldering Gym
When some bouldering enthusiasts crossed paths at a local Portland-area gym, they found they all wanted to expand the area's bouldering options. So they founded The Circuit Bouldering Gym, a facility focused on community building, where like-minded people can pursue similar passions in an encouraging and safety-conscious environment. Today, Circuit encourages visitors to try new things and push the limits of their comfort zones. Boasting three of the largest bouldering-only gyms in the world, they also designed many of their simulated climbing stations as top-out boulders, letting guests experience what it's like to actually climb outdoors. Additionally, they instruct guests with programs such as 90-minute intro courses, advanced clinics with professional climber athletes, and programs tailored for kids including birthday parties, after-school programs, and summer and winter-break camps. The third and newest location in Tigard offers a state-of-the-art facility with over 19,000 square feet of bouldering and yoga. All yoga takes place at the new Ganesha and Hanuman studios at Tigard, and all locations also have a full weights area, allowing for workouts and CrossFit training.

  • Planet Granite Portland
When the climbers of Planet Granite say that community anchors everything they do, they have a history of outreach to back it up. After Castle Rock State Park appeared on California’s closure list, Planet Granite’s team quickly organized a fundraiser to save the sanctuary. They pledged $10,000 in matching funds, threw an auction, scheduled guest speakers, and obtained support from companies such as REI. In one night, they raised $20,725. This kind of response has typified Planet Granite’s team since opening its first facility in 1994. One of the first climbing gyms in the country, Planet Granite has expanded with gyms in Portland, Belmont, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale. The diverse array of climbing resources at each location led Popsugar to name the gym conglomerate one of the top five in San Francisco in 2011. At the Portland location, members scale 30,500 square feet of climbing walls that soar up to 55 feet high. And, bouldering includes both high-ball and top-out climbing. In keeping with their commitment to community, the staff tailors instruction and climbing routes to every ability level and affinity for hand sweatiness. They also supervise each gyms’ fully equipped fitness centers, which provide a peaceful counterbalance to the full-body workout of rock climbing.
