Every day for the past 20 years, the team of adventurers at Island Camps has heard the call of the ocean's cresting waves. They've answered with a full slate of surfing and standup paddleboarding lessons and day camps geared toward beginners who might be hearing that call for the first time. Certified in first aid and lifeguard ocean rescue, they help students feel safe while instilling in them the skills needed to explore the wild blue yonder.
Since paddleboarding is easy to pick up, the team regularly leads newcomers on tours of the intercoastal waterways and Deerfield Island Park. During sunset and ecology tours, groups dip their paddles into cool waters while slipping past mangroves, wetland marshes, and the cave of the local sea lord. If you're looking for a more grounded experience, Island Camps also offers skateboarding lessons that teach basic skills and tricks such as the ollie.
La Playa Water Sports thrills customers with its aquatic thrill rides, including a new one: the flyboard. After the rider is strapped in, they're propelled
up to 30 feet into the air—or dive below the water's surface—thanks to powerful jets of water spewing from the board-mounted boots and wrist-mounted nozzles. The durable craft draws its power from any personal watercraft, such as a jet ski or hyperactive dolphin, letting the fun go on and on. Certified trainers, including Fredrick Senn, one of the first flyboarders in the area, are always on hand to fit clients with life jackets and helmets and to cover safety tips and basic operation before each session. Though the waterfront facility specializes in flyboards and banana boats, future services will include surfboard and kayak lessons and rentals.
Insider tips on tidal patterns and secret surf spots, borne of a lifetime in local waters, are part of the intangible edge offered by Singer Island Surf Camp Inc., in operation for the past 15 years and run by a born-and-raised native of Palm Beach. As a Palm Beach County native, camp founder and owner Paige Parker doesn’t remember a time she wasn’t closely tied to the water. When she and her neighborhood pals were kids, she recalls, “The ocean was our playground and our babysitter.” And though it's probably true that anyone with a lifeguard certification could lead snorkeling tours and sportfishing charters, Parker knows that her inborn understanding of the local tidal patterns makes a difference.
A staff of surf-seasoned EMTs and firefighters who are also certified in ocean rescue, lifeguard, CPR, and first aid help Parker lead private and group surfing lessons for all ages and experience levels as well as provide paddleboarding and kayaking instruction. And when school’s out, kids aged 6–16 years old can dive into summer camps and surf along Singer Island's reef-and-sandbar system or paddleboard to Peanut Island. A full rental shop, meanwhile, fills out its stock of standard surf gear with standup paddleboards, kayaks, water trampolines, and inflatable water wheels.

Frothy seawater jumps skyward as the churn of high-powered, 110-horsepower jet skis launches the droplets from behind their watery tails. Among the many sea-gliding offerings of American Watersports, the company's fleet of speedy jet skis juxtaposes to its man-powered offerings of single or double kayaks and upright paddleboards that calmly cut through waves and wakes or assist in minnow herding along the coast. Groups can man 13- and 16-foot sailboats that await gentle offshore winds to start their journeys, or take in the ocean from a sandy perch with a day rental of beach furniture. The Pompano Beach area reveals its natural beauty on guided tours of the area via jet ski or paddleboat, wherein visitors take in local gems such as the Hillsboro Lighthouse or the area's exclusive hermit-crab resorts.
On the Beach's owners, Ken "The Sun Tan Man" and Captain Tony, provide all the gear needed for a relaxing and adventurous day at the beach. Behind the Royal Vista Resort, the beachside shop rents out maritime toys—Wave Runners, sailboats, kayaks, and boogie boards— to help tourists and locals to soak up sun, skim across waves, and lounge on the sand. The shop’s seasoned mariners—all with at least 25 years of experience—pull from their stores of knowledge and Old Bay seafood rub to devise custom lessons for sailors of any ability. Ken and Tony recognize that some people and all wicked witches might rather gaze at the water than be dampened by it. To cater to this landlubbing demographic, On the Beach rents out bicycles or shaded stays underneath beachside cabanas.
