Candles flicker inside the marble fireplace, sending droplets of light into the 1920s colonial revival–style home that houses Quintana’s Barber & Dream Spa. Hardwood floors and tan leather seating compose a warm color palette, and WiFi—installed by the ghost of the original architect—keeps busy guests connected. After appointment reminders land in their email inboxes, clients step into the earth-toned sanctuary for services ranging from basic mani-pedis and beard trims to all-day spa excursions. Guests choose services from a menu of massages, facials, waxing, and haircare, which can be combined into packages for individuals and couples.
Quintana's soothing sanctuary doesn't just speak for itself. Patrons banded together to vote the salon into CityVoter's top five for Best Massage, Barber, and Mani-Pedi in 2013. The spa's acclaim page also spotlights press recognition of Friendliest Staff, Best-Looking Storefront, and Most Helpful Combs.

With vegan products and an all-natural skincare line, the staff at Shades of Red Day Spa hopes to perform the purest iteration of many traditional spa and salon services. Led by 20-year industry veteran and salon owner Karla Greene, the seven salon consultants continually update their education to stay abreast of beauty trends and share their knowledge with clients. Their specialties include hairstyling, cutting, and hair-color corrections for clients after bobbing for apples in a barrel of fruit punch. Before or after their treatments, patrons can relax in the waiting area, where floor-to-ceiling windows surround products in glass cases, dried-flower arrangements reaching toward towering ceilings, and sculptural lamps.
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
I tailor each massage to each unique individual. No two people are alike, so no two massages are the same. I offer some aromatherapy, and thai bodywork is coming soon. I have one of the best pairs of hands in Cleveland, and satisfaction is guaranteed.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I have always wanted to do massage and have been told by instructors and tai-chi masters that I am a natural healer. I finally completed my schooling and now have my own place.
What do you love most about your job?
The people! I love knowing that I can help people feel better and knowing that I can make a difference in people's lives by helping them relax, destress, rejuvenate, and ease pain and discomfort. Without the people, there would be no reason to massage!
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
It was actually from my massage instructor. She grabbed hold of me and told me in my ear, "That was the best massage I have had in years, and I am paying you for it." She put $50 in my hand and told me not to tell anyone. The next day, I asked her how she felt, and she said amazing.

As a young girl, licensed massage therapist DeAnna massaged her dad's back and feet after he flew all night as a Helicopter Pilot for the Dallas Police Department. The joy of using massage to alleviate stress and pain has stayed with her since then. In 2004, she began practicing professionally and focuses on individually tailoring her bodywork to the unique body in front of her. By listening to each client's concerns, she induces relaxation and equilibrium by assisting the body in its own self-correcting abilities.
