  • Holocaust Memorial Center
Named one of the city's best cultural museums by CBS Detroit, the Holocaust Memorial Center is among America’s first Holocaust museums. For more than 25 years, the HMC has memorialized the senseless murder of millions, promoting tolerance while sending out a call to action to prevent future discrimination, hate crimes, bullying, and genocide by keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and the lives it claimed. Starting near the museum's lobby, an illustrated timeline tracing 4,000 years of Jewish history leads into The Museum of European Jewish Heritage, which highlights Judaism through artifacts and displays. From there, a ramp descending beyond a 22-foot window display of Nazi propaganda leads into an exhibit on The Final Solution. Here, displays and audiovisual installations usher visitors toward the Survivors' Theater, where live presentations by Detroit-area survivors illuminate the atrocities' personal costs. Daily tours are led by the museum's caring, expert educators, who guide guests through the exhibits while encouraging them to internalize the lessons for use in their own lives. New to the museum is the Weisberg Gallery, where a Holocaust-era boxcar stands as a reminder of the scale of the period's atrocities. The museum also welcomes traveling exhibits such as Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow, a collection depicting the story of Jewish professors fleeing Nazism and finding teaching positions at historically black universities. The exhibit explores the encounter between these scholars and their students, the impact the relationships had on one another, and the effect on the Civil Rights Movement and American society. Post-war exhibits cover the Nuremberg Trials, honor the righteous individuals who risked their lives to resist the Nazis or save Jewish lives during the war, and pay homage to those who perished with a memorial flame. The museum also houses a well-stocked library, where guests can research their genealogy with materials dedicated to European Jewish history. Beyond its core exhibits, the HMC hosts special exhibits encompassing photographs, art, and history, in addition to sending survivors to speaking engagements throughout the city and hosting the Kindertransport Memory Quilt, whose patches represent the experiences of Jewish youth rescued from Eastern Europe.

  • Astute Artistry
Lisa Rowe Glickoff's more than 20-year career is just as diverse as the pictures of fantasy, special effects, and beauty makeup in her portfolio. When she is not busy prepping faces for fashion, film, and high-profile events? such as dolling up celebs for the 2006 Academy Awards? the makeup-industry veteran spends time on the product side of the industry. In addition to serving as a beauty rep for brands such as Paula Dorf Cosmetics, she also has created Astute, her own line of makeup. But even with all of these accomplishments, the one that?s closest to her heart remains the founding of Astute Artistry, her makeup-training boutique and beauty studio. From within the 8,000 square foot space?decorated with modern Paris-themed decor?she teaches aspiring make-up artists how to create Hollywood-approved special effects and beauty makeup during hands-on classes that range from beginner level to advanced professional. When not teaching others the tricks of the beauty trade, Lisa puts her aesthetician license and chic boutique to use by shaping brows with threading, enhancing eyes with lash extensions, and rejuvenating mature, teen, and dehydrated skin during facials. Lisa and her team also provide traditional makeup applications for brides and those attending special events. Lisa is also committed to helping those in need, which is why she founded Astute Artistry II, a nonprofit makeup studio catering to women affected by skin and hair conditions, which was featured in Hour Detroit magazine.

  • Skin Deep Spa
With a newly minted medical degree and ability to pronounce caduceus, a young Dr. Michael W. Gray charged headlong onto the osteopathic scene. After a stint as the chief resident at Midwestern University's Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center and a fellowship at Northwestern University, the already accomplished plastic surgeon packed up his snake and staff and headed for the Pleasant Peninsula. Today, when he's not discussing advancements in plastic surgery on ABC and NBC local news, he brings his years of experience to The Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center and Skin Deep Spa where he and his staff perform a full line of surgical and nonsurgical medical procedures. At Skin Deep Spa, Gray practices a less-aggressive approach to cosmetic procedures with noninvasive treatments in a space designed to put clients at ease. Zerona cold-laser systems and the pulsed energy of Venus Freeze gently smooth away cellulite, for example. The in-house Beauti Bar area, manned by licensed aestheticians, sells Skin Deep beauty products designed by Dr. Gray himself to augment the cosmetic treatments. The zen-garden-inspired décor infuses the spa with earth-toned tiles, leafy green plants, the sound of rippling water flowing over stones in fountains, and ornate wooden chests filled with meditating yogi masters.

Comprising 10,000 square feet, the spa boasts nearly 30 private treatment rooms in which to enjoy soothing massages enhanced with soft lighting and soothing music. Candlelit whirlpool tubs invite bodies to soak away inches or stress in baths filled with milk and honey or firming and toning tonics, and miniature pedicure tubs welcome feet to soak away walking woes with help from soothing sea salts and oils. A dozen or so facials see the spa's aestheticians personalizing each step to suit skin's specific needs, leading a writer for Spa Magazine to declare, "My skin never looked and felt so good."

  • Swirlberry
Despite the fact that they sell frozen treats, Swirlberry isn't synonymous with sweet—their artisan-made frozen yogurt embraces crisp, refreshing flavors that aren't overloaded with sugar. The machines at each location dispense classic variants such as Greek tart and vanilla, fruity spoonfuls of pomegranate and strawberry, as well as Hershey's ice cream and vanilla custard. Even the flavors that skew toward desserts—birthday cake, for example—are still low-fat and don't overpower the palate. Every flavor is also kosher, gluten-free, and host to four active live cultures that may aid in digestion. And, Swirlberry's resident yogurt mixologist keeps the menu fresh by inventing seasonal flavors, rather than by combining chocolate with vanilla and calling it "mystery taste." Guests can embellish their yogurt with toppings that run the gamut from fresh fruit and berries to cereal bits and chocolate chips. More decadent non-yogurt treats such as vanilla custard and Hershey's ice cream are also available.

  • Acupuncture Healthcare Associates of Michigan
Though they hail from different backgrounds, the three acupuncturists at Michigan Associates of Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine share a fundamental belief in the overarching connection between mind and body. At the center’s core is founder Julie Silver, a board-certified acupuncturist who has been espousing the benefits of Chinese medicine in the media since setting up shop 13 years ago. Julie initially turned to acupuncture to seek relief from her own health complaints, and as a result, switched careers to focus her energies on Chinese herbal medicine. At Michigan Associates of Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, these practices come to fruition as the team works to correct imbalances in the body, which are believed to be major contributors to a wide array of health-related problems, such as anxiety, pain, and chronic cases of the willies. Julie and her staff address these symptoms and conditions with acupuncture and Chinese herbs, providing a special cache of treatments for women's health, fertility, and pregnancy issues.
