A Breath of Serenity co-owners Elizabeth Rackley and Marie Brown decided to open their own massage business after feeling constrained while working for others. "We both wanted more say in how customer service was carried out," Elizabeth says. "We wanted customer service to be top priority and profits to be second."
That customer-focused mindset permeates all they do. When guests arrive for therapeutic massages, the healing gurus have them fill out a questionnaire to get to the bottom of aches and pains. "We go over it with you and we discuss, what's bothering you? What's going on? What kind of work do you do?" Elizabeth says. "And then we combine multiple modalities … into what that client needs." If something hurts, is too soft, or clients ever feel uncomfortable, she says the therapists want their clients to speak up so they can adjust their techniques accordingly.
During deep-tissue massages, the muscle menders take their time and use gentle pressure to bypass the pain sometimes associated with that modality. They can also customize couples massages with gourmet chocolates, rose petals, candlelight, and violas charmed to play themselves on request. Soft, relaxing music saturates the air during each session, but Elizabeth says that—like everything else—this can be personalized to what the customer wants. "If they have a special CD and they want to bring it, bring it," she says.
In the late 1920s, the Great Depression was rendering most Americans professionally and financially paralyzed. But in a small California kitchen, Merle Nethercutt Norman was putting a plan in motion to formulate her own skincare products and share them with family and friends. She truly believed in her formulas, knowing that by getting them on as many faces as possible, she would develop a following of customers. She was right—within a few years she and her nephew were opening their first studio in Santa Monica, and they eventually unveiled a series of independently operated stores that enabled women to take ownership during a time of gender-based limitations such as men-only restrooms.
Today, in approximately 2,000 stores across three countries, the three basic principles of Merle's original vision still apply. Each studio is independently owned and fosters an in-depth knowledge of the company's own line of makeup and skincare products. Just as Merle shared her creations with close friends and sallow mannequins more than 80 years ago, today's aestheticians embody the business's ""try before you buy"" philosophy. A menu of complimentary studio services—from foundation checks to express facials—allows patrons to sample the lauded brand before committing to the purchase of products or full spa treatments.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Quality of customer care and massage therapy. Thorough sessions, attention to detail, and listening to the client's needs. Very holistic, with goals set for each massage and after-care plans.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
After 13 years of providing massage, I wanted to open a facility that was safe, calm, and quiet to allow individuals to enrich their mind-body connection. To deepen their sense of well-being, to heal or recover from pain or injury. To help lower stress levels, which will help overall health.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the quiet, relaxing environment of a massage room. I love the ability to help people feel relief from pain and discomfort. I love to help formulate plans and goals for each session and after, through specific massage techniques and exercise.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
"That was phenomenal, such finesse, with exceptional detail and knowledge of the muscular system."
