Although nickelodeons were his stock and trade, Detroit entrepreneur John H. Kunsky wanted to develop something bigger—not just a quarterlodeon or a movie theater, but a movie palace. After achieving that goal with The Columbia—the second largest movie house at the time—he set his sights on the suburbs with the Royal Oak Music Theatre, which opened in 1928. Originally a home to moving pictures and vaudeville acts, the theater changed with cultural tides and took a hiatus during the dawn of the multiplex. But in 1978, it sprang back to life as a comedy and live music venue, welcoming acts such as young Steve Martin and a then unknown Hall and Oates. Today, the towering Fourth Street fixture also plays host to traveling Broadway shows, musicals, and dance recitals for up to 1,700 audience members at a time.

The theatre has become a go-to for nationally touring bands—including The English Beat, symphonic pop outfit The Polyphonic Spree, and surf-rock legend Dick Dale—as well as popular tribute acts like The Mega 80s, Lez Zeppelin & Panama. Acclaimed comedians such as Gilbert Gottfried, Jeff Ross, and Brian Posehn take the stage on a regular basis at the club, and cult-favorite films are the main attraction on Brew & View nights.
