  • Me 'n Mommy To Be
Me ‘n Mommy To Be owner Nettie Byerly understands little ones sprout in what seems like no time at all, so she eases the swift passage of time and inevitable outgrowing of clothes and toys with a stock of new and gently used items. Maternity wear outfits quickly growing bellies, and a vast selection of kids’ clothing for infants to teens—including designer brands such as Gap Kids, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Hollister Co.—covers fast-growing limbs. A rotating variety of toys are on hand to entertain youngsters as they move from a fascination with dinosaurs to an interest in tracking the fruit-snack futures market. In addition to toys for purchase, an in-store playroom packed with whimsical diversions occupies little ones as parents shop. Me ‘n Mommy To Be also rents strollers, cribs, car seats, and other child-friendly contraptions, letting parents test-drive different brands before making a purchase and helping grandparents prepare for energy-filled visits.

  • Indianola Glass Creations
A shimmering butterfly hovers suspended in a pink glass teardrop. Glass bands wind around each other like ribbons of pulled taffy to form a glass icicle. Intricate and distinct, the glass artwork at Indianola Glass Creations reflects the diverse specialties of the shops’ glassworkers. Shop partner and lampwork instructor Bobbi Oelmann says it’s this versatility that first drew her to the medium. On any given day, you can find her and her fellow artists slumping glass in the shop’s kiln, blowing glass in the torch room, or meticulously cutting panes of stained glass into adorable geometric shapes. Artists can easily customize these glass pieces to suit customers’ specifications—they create earrings to match a prized pendant, for instance, or fire custom-blown glass ornaments. Artists not only sell their artwork and jewelry, but empower budding artists to create their own one-of-a-kind creations with weekly classes. Groups of 3–10 students may learn to turn glass rods into beads during a lampworking class, or piece together a stained-glass ornament. To ensure a positive experience, Ms. Oelmann says that instructors strive to get to know each student and his or her goals for the class: “We want them to enjoy it just as much as we do.”

  • Bella Joli
The artists that handcraft Bella Joli’s jewelry trust only the finest components to bring their designs to life: freshwater pearls, 14-karat gold, and precious stones, to name a few. Though most pieces skew toward classic styles, each necklace or bracelet is completely unique. So whether you don a necklace of layered golden chains, each frosted with white stones and pearls, or a funky silver bracelet studded with blue gems, you won’t spot anyone else wearing it. And the same goes for purses and scarves, cocktail napkins and tea towels, and glassware and serving platters.
