Roaring ATVs charge up Southwest Desert sand dunes in a storm of golden particles. Miles away, intrepid explorers rappel down the sheer cliffs of the Valley of Fire. Elsewhere, kayakers drift across the placid surface of Lake Mead in the sunset, and passengers inside a helicopter witness the majesty of the Grand Canyon from the breathtaking angle normally reserved for sightseeing birds. These seemingly disparate adventures have one thing in common: the people who imagined them. Each trek was dreamed up by the founders and guides of Awesome Adventures, who see the landscape of Nevada and Utah not as harsh and wild, but as a source of endless entertainment and education. The enthusiastic staffers—who specialize in recreations ranging from rock climbing to whitewater rafting—encourage visitors and locals alike to step outside the bounds of the city and explore exciting new vistas.
The year 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of guided rafting tours through the Colorado River's Black Canyon. Created by volcanic activity over the course of millennia, its walls rise more than 2,000 feet above the Colorado River’s edge. Rafters glide between these walls on the company’s assorted rafting tours, which also incorporate visits to sites such as the Hoover Dam or the Techatticup Mine, where they learn about area mining history.
There's an awful lot to see in Las Vegas. If you confine yourself to the Strip however, then you'll see only a fraction of it. Adventure Photo Tours is a sightseeing company that capitalizes on Vegas's central location amid the incredible parks and natural attractions of the American Southwest. Visitors can choose from four different tour formats—private or semi-private, half-day or full-day—and 15 different destinations, including the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Hoover Dam, and California vineyards. Each tour makes stops for wildlife photography and selfies with cacti, as well as conveying histories of the ancient Native American petroglyphs, natural arches, and ghost towns that tour takers might encounter.
When husband-and-wife team Will and Donna Tryon started the company in 1998, they had one vehicle and two guides: themselves. Since then, the fleet has grown to 30 vehicles, including four-wheel-drive SUVs, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 tour buses, and 14-passenger VIP mini coaches. The outfit now boasts 65 employees, who pick up groups from Las Vegas hotels and return them to the world-class casinos and neon rock formations of the Strip after the day's outing.
Don't be thrown by the name—Big Rock Candy Mountain isn't a magical mound of sugary goodness. It's something much better. Dotted with cabins and campgrounds and crisscrossed with ATV trails and ziplines, the wilderness resort offers an open-air escape from the daily grind. Bald eagles fly overhead while campers navigate the waterways on whitewater rafts, and if the fish aren't biting, guests can still grab an old-fashioned dinner at the resort's seasonal restaurant.
