  • Monterey Whale Watching
Princess Monterey Whale Watching Princess Monterey Whale Watching’s two 100-foot vessels slice through the Bay waters with ease, following currents, wave patterns, and other subtle signs to spot whales in the distance. While the 3-hour excursions—which feature full narration by a marine biologist and naturalist with at least 10 years of experience in local waters—don’t always result in whale sightings, they most always yield close wildlife encounters of one sort or another. After all, the bay teems with life in the form of dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, otters, seals, and sea lions, not to mention all of the wild birds overhead. The Wild Side of Monterey Bay The Monterey Bay Area is renowned for its stunning views and picturesque beaches. It also holds a reputation for the incredible diversity of its wildlife. Here are just a few of the creatures that regularly inhabit its waters: Whales: The Bay provides sheltered waters for migrating whales of many species, most particularly grey and humpback whales. In winter, when grey whales most frequently swim the waters, one can also find orca pods hunting them. In the summer months, the bay has even been known to house a mighty blue whale or two. Porpoises: While the big whales are easy to spot from a distance, their smaller cousins, porpoises, are perhaps more frequently sighted. You’ll know them by their low triangular dorsal fin and stubby rounded snout. In addition to these small-toothed mammals, bottlenose dolphins, northern right whale dolphins, and Pacific white-sided dolphins also reside in the Bay, and frequently frolic along the surface. Birds: Not all that soars above the sea is a gull. The skies over the Bay, in fact, contain an equally impressive number of species as the water itself. Cormorants and jaegers dip and twil, loons and grebes cry out over the wind, and black-footed albatrosses hunt from on high, delivering omens to would-be sailors. Other Wildlife: Sea mammals and birds only describe a fraction of the bay’s population. Its waters make an ideal home for otters, as well as the sharks that hunt them. The bay also acts as a fertile breeding ground for elephant seals, and provides safe beaches for amphibious sea turtles to lay their eggs.

  • Monterey Bay Whale Watching
The Three Faces of Monterey Bay Whale Watching Marine Biologists Every one of Monterey Bay Whale Watching’s tours is led by an ultra-knowledgeable marine biologist, ensuring that outings aren’t just spectacular, but also educational. Owned and overseen by lead naturalist Nancy Black—who touts more than 25 years of experience in her field—the company’s team narrates tours and answers any and all questions about the colorful web of life. They also strive to instill in passengers a sense of deep respect for these animals, as well as a persistent awareness of their fragile ecosystem. Marine Mammals Depending on the time of year, you might see gray whales, humpback whales, four varieties of dolphins, killer whales, and porpoises. Tours travel near to the Monterey Submarine Canyon, where deep waters allow the many species of marine wildlife to swim close to the shore. There’s also a plethora of seabirds, turtles, and other wildlife that live and thrive in the area. Year-Round Marine Trips These tours are offered throughout the year, and the duration of the tour will vary based on how many species are in the area. However, visitors can always rest assured they’ll be able to set their eyes on some stunning marine wildlife in their natural habitat, whether it’s a breaching humpback whale in the spring or a speedy dolphin in the winter.

  • Chris’ Whale Watching Tours
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is home to 27 species of marine mammals, more than 100 species of marine birds, and 345 species of fish, as well as the leatherback turtle. Captain Chris Arcoleo, Sr. and his fellow skippers introduce visitors to this wildlife menagerie during three-hour narrated tours of the sanctuary. Collectively, the skippers captain three different vessels equipped with all of the standard safety features, as well as sonar, radar, and eco-friendly twin engines. This technology—plus the captains' vast experience—gives groups unforgettable glimpses of the area's marine life, including the possibility of an up-close encounter with gray or humpback whales. Passengers should also keep their eyes peeled for Pacific white-sided dolphins, California sea lions, otters, harbor seals, and pirate ghosts.

  • Randy's Fishing and Whale Watching Trips
Around Fisherman's Wharf, the name Randy has been associated with whales for more than 65 years. Salvatore "Randy" Randazzo opened up Randy's Fishing and Whale Watching Trips in 1945, and his legacy lives on today aboard the Chubasco and Sur Randy. Along with their crews, these two vessels take passengers out on fishing charters and sightseeing tours into the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where whales often hang out and swap favorite krill recipes. Captains narrate the tours as blue whales, grey whales, humpbacks, minkes, and other aquatic giants breach the surface. Even sea otters and dolphins make appearances. Other members of the Randy's crew lead sports fishing expeditions out in search of salmon, crab, rock cod, and halibut. The experts give instruction as needed, and they'll even filet the fish once caught.

  • Blue Ocean Whale Watch
When it comes to size, the blue whale trumps anything that has ever walked, swam, or flown across planet Earth. Stretching roughly 80 feet long, these titanic creatures swim deep below the Pacific Ocean, feeding on thousands of tiny krill at a time?but like all aquatic mammals, they eventually have to come up for air. That's when they meet Blue Ocean Whale Watch. Aboard a 60-foot sightseeing vessel, naturalist Kate Cummings spouts the aforementioned whale facts and much more. However, it's not until whales breach the surface or jump into the air that passengers truly comprehend their massive size. Even the naturalist herself?who has been on countless voyages?can't help but take a picture each and every trip. Ms. Cummings works alongside Captain Jim Davis, who's navigated the ocean currents and Poseidon's construction zones for more than 30 years. The two head out in search of blue whales, humpback whales, and other marine life, including dolphins and sea turtles. The stars of the tours change throughout year (during the spring, summer, and fall, humpback whales make their way to Monterey Bay to feed on krill and anchovies), but passengers can always catch views and photos from the upper deck.
