Before Zombie Buffet 5K, the zombie apocalypse was simply a tall tale played out in movies and among survival enthusiasts. Now, the deliciously horrific fantasy has been realized in the form of a fun and challenging 5K. First, runners must choose a side—either traverse the course as a runner, or move about the infected habitat as a sprinting or roaming zombie.
Each runner gets two health flags, which zombies try their undead best to steal. When runners lose both flags, they become zombies and must then hunt down their fellows in search of other flags. The zombie with the most flags in each starting wave wins and goes home with the happy knowledge that they are the fittest of the unfit. The top three runners in each wave who finish with at least one health flag still intact will win the running division.
Regardless of their alignment, all participants get swag such as a Zombie Buffet 5K T-shirt, a silicone bracelet, and dog tags, but the running winners and zombie winners are bestowed additional secret grand prizes.
With its black lights, neon colors, dance music, and hundreds of people frolicking through foam, the Foam Glow afterparty looks a lot like an outdoor music festival. Except, unlike at a typical music festival, the crowds of partiers had to run a 5K to get there.
The Foam Glow fun run features runners in all-white clothing navigating Foam Glow zones, where they're sprayed with all-natural, nontoxic foam. Each zone sprays orange, pink, or blue foam, which glows in the dark under the course's high-intensity black lights. By the end of the race, the runners' outfits look completely tie-dyed, making them the envy of all chameleons.
After they cross the finish line, participants head to the afterparty, where DJs, food, drinks, and more foam await. But it's not only about having fun: each race benefits a local children's charity.
Whether you know it or not, you've probably already spent some time preparing for Roundhouse Racing's 5K Foam Fest. Perhaps you've zoomed down a playground slide? Or dived onto a backyard Slip 'N Slide? Grownup versions of these childhood challenges make up many of the 15–30 obstacles in this 5K race, challenging contestants to slide down a 40-foot "Death Drop" and skid across an impressive 50-foot Slip 'N Slide.
Running through them all are pits and pools of foam and mud, as far as the eye can see. Thankfully, the challenges bring ample rewards at the finish line—namely a medal, a beer, unlimited temporary tattoos, and still more messy activities. Away from the race, participants can leap into foam pits while kids bound inside bounce houses, gleefully imagining what kind of rug would really tie the place together.
There are two rules at The Color Run 5K races—wear a white shirt at the starting line, and finish plastered in color. Participants of all fitness levels weave through a leisurely course as volunteers lob colored powder at them, crossing the finish line doused in a rainbow of hues. Following the dash, color runners gather at the Finish Festival to celebrate their achievement with music, dancing, and even more massive color throws.
This year the minds behind The Color Run aren't just content to bring fun to every city they visit—they're bringing "a 5K vacation." The Tropicolor Tour puts an island spin on the race with scented color powders, inflated palm trees, a Rainbow Beach finish festival with sand and beach chairs, and, of course, colorful photo ops to brighten your day.
