Although photographer Ricki Douglas enjoys snapping pictures at her photography studio in Vista, she knows that nothing beats a workday at the beach. She often takes her camera out to locales in parks and beaches to take advantage of California's breathtaking scenery and plentiful natural light. Whether subjects pose in front of the Pacific Ocean, the picturesque cityscape, or a mime's invisible box, Ricki strives to capture their unique personalities. Though most of her work involves snapping portraits of families, pets, and graduates, she also enjoys creating head shots for business and social networking website profiles.
Joe Decker isn’t your ordinary fitness trainer. He might just be the planet’s fittest human, at least according to Guinness World Records. He earned the title of World’s Fittest Man in 2000 after mastering a 24-hour challenge comprising a 100-mile bike ride, a 10-mile run, 1,100 pushups, and other exhausting feats. Today, his boot camp program, Gut Check Fitness, helps exercisers tackle goals that are just as lofty with outdoor workouts that have won accolades from TrailRunner magazine and the attention of Coca-Cola's fitness programs.
Each ever-changing workout leads participants into the great outdoors, where they discover the true meaning of “gut check,” a military term used to denote a test of courage, character, or determination. With the help of several talented trainers, Joe propels athletes through a gauntlet of fitness drills that torches dozens of calories and fortifies muscles throughout the body. The classes’ main piece of equipment is the earth, which provides hills for climbing, gravity for resistance, and solid ground for sprints and bodyweight exercises. In addition to basking in the trainers’ shouts of encouragement, the group cheers one another toward each milestone, fostering friendships while creating an ongoing incentive to achieve.

Jean Marshall was first exposed to photography on the other side of the lens. As an international model, she was accustomed to photographers snapping images of her, but it wasn't until she started to document her travels that she realized that her passion lay as a photographer, not a photographee. Today, Jean snaps shots of weddings, engagements, families, and portraits, using natural lighting and her eye for simplistic surroundings.
Heather is published photographer who's had two solo shows at the San Diego Art Institute. But many of her photos are only seen by about four eyes total. That's because she specializes in pinup photography, boudoir and maternity shoots, helping subjects unveil a sultry side of themselves that they can share with a special someone—or keep to themselves. Heather has staffed Shadow Boudoir studio with an all-female team that helps her subjects feel comfortable and confident. She's also stocked her in-studio wardrobe with props, such as humanely-raised zebra-print chairs. And, for clients who prefer to bring their own apparel, but don't know what to wear, Shadow Boudoir's concierges can even prepare custom outfit options at Fredrick's of Hollywood.
Kristen Ruth and Shaun Thomas, the shutterbugs behind Fringe Photography, are never at a loss for the perfect backdrop. Their downtown San Clemente studio is only a short walk from the beach and pier, where an abundance of sand, boardwalk, and natural light all but beg for the lens’ attention. Nature has to compete fiercely, though, against Fringe Photography’s diverse models, who include toddling children, engaged couples, and vintage-style bathing beauties. The company's indoor studio provides more shade and privacy for intimate boudoir shoots, taken in classic pinup poses or from flattering high angles. No matter what kind of shoot, Kristen and Shaun love to collaborate and experiment—with themes, poses, and finishing color contrasts; their portfolio runs the gamut of full color, black and white, and vintage shading.
While on-set, Kristen and Shaun encourage their clients to get comfortable by getting dolled up by the lighted mirrors of the private hair and makeup station, nibbling on complementary snacks, and striking poses as their favorite songs play in the background. Afterward, clients peruse online viewing galleries and preserve their favorite pictures in hardback albums, on CDs, or with jack-o'-lantern carvings.
