  • Henry's Soul Cafe
At Henry's Soul Cafe, the smell of crispy, lightly breaded chicken mingles in the air with the sweet scent of signature sweet-potato pie—just as it's been doing since 1968. Amidst this mouthwatering perfume, chefs concoct down-home southern soul food such as fried fish, smoky ribs, smothered pork chops, and mounds of creamy mac 'n' cheese. Each day, they lovingly bake their specialty sweet-potato pie, which is as wholesome, famous, and orange as Santa Claus after a bad spray tan. When Henry's green T-shirt-clad staff isn't doling out plates of rib-sticking fare, they strive to better their community by supporting charities that help the homeless, the blind, and children in need.

  • MOM's Organic Market Waldorf
Scott Nash started MOM's Organic Market in his mom's garage. He repurposed the space as a warehouse for organic goods, dispatching orders to local buyers. When he outgrew the space, he rented an actual warehouse, and then a bigger one, eventually outgrowing the home-delivery business and replacing it with a retail outlet. From there, the business mushroomed like a naturally grown, pesticide-free mushroom—it now maintains ten retail locations across Maryland and Virginia. Each location subscribes to a single mission—to protect and restore the environment. Store managers stock organic and local products whenever possible, and reduce waste by minimizing packaging. To power their stores, they call upon natural energy sources, such as wind and the earth's molten core. As an added benefit, they buy in bulk to keep prices low and author recipes that transform organic produce into delicious meals.

  • Dessert Affairs Waldorf

On the decadent side, the staff crafts a range of desserts, from gooey brownies to dessert shooters and numerous flavors of cupcakes. For juices, they combine up to three fresh fruits, such as mango, raspberry, and pineapple, to create sweet, sippable glasses full of nutrients. For an added health boost, they can also blend in kale, protein powder, or flaxseed to create a true morning energy drink without incorporating a pulverized alarm clock.

  • Nalls Produce
At some point, most children run a lemonade stand; Cary Nalls, however, broke into the business world with a produce stand. In the early 1960s, young Cary and his grandparents had a garden that grew more goodies than they could eat. So Cary convinced them to set up a stand, which quickly expanded to a tent, which eventually turned into a permanent structure. By age 15, when most kids are pouring all their time into being popular or getting taller, Cary had himself a bustling business. Today, family members runs things at Nalls Produce. Despite its success over the years, the store still identifies itself as a roadside market. Trucks arrive multiple times per week loaded with fresh produce, keeping the shelves stocked with seasonal fruits and vegetables. In the fall, Nalls transforms into a pumpkin patch, where children explore tubes and tunnels made of straw; in the winter, the property becomes a Christmas-tree lot. The store remains just as connected to the community now as it was in the '60s, too; it works with local schools, charities, and organizations on numerous projects.
