  • Portland Adult Education
In 1850, Portland Adult Education began doling out knowledge to the masses, focusing on English, business, and all areas of academia. Like the 19th-century horses that gradually transformed into Dodge Caravans, the courses have evolved over the last century and a half. They're now split into two categories: business and personal enrichment. On the business side, students can master everything from computer basics to law. Personal enrichment classes encompass cooking, fitness, and even meditation.

  • Day One
Day One has worked to prevent, intervene in, treat, and address the after-effects of substance abuse in adolescents and young adults for nearly four decades, using in-school services, outpatient therapy, and a residential program. The residential program targets adolescent males who have succumbed to substance abuse. These clients live at the center for eight months to a year and undergo a series of challenges, setting goals to help learn how to make positive choices and healthy decisions. Outpatient services include individual, group, and play therapy for survivors of substance abuse or children affected by substance abuse. These participants use tools such as group discussion and creative writing to cope with the abuse or neglect they may have suffered. The center also engages youth in creating healthy futures through peer programs at local schools, where teens help each other talk through and develop strategies for overcoming substance abuse, eating disorders, or self-harm.

  • Sylvan Learning Center Portland
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews. Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results.
