  • Barlow Planetarium
The night sky is a vast ocean of celestial objects such as the moon, the bright lights of our closest stars, and the warm glow of neighboring galaxies. Located at the University of Wisconsin Fox Valley, Barlow Planetarium helps uncover the vastness of the universe through a 3-D-capable Digistar projector, which?combined with 10,000 watts of digital sound and a 48-foot projection screen?transports guests into the deepest trenches of space. The facility's star shows include family programs that make astronomy easy to understand as well as feature shows that tickle the minds of more hardened astronomy buffs. Along with celestial exploration, the planetarium transforms with dancing lights and rich sounds during laser shows. These programs add visual touches to music from the likes of The Beatles or Isaac Newton's little-known punk band. The planetarium also hosts academic programs for grade-school children. These include the Wisconsin Space Academy, in which students build and launch rockets, and the Wisconsin Astronomy Academy, which lets pupils peer through telescopes and discover vending machines floating through space.

  • Camera Corner/Connecting Point
Camera Corner opened its doors more than a half-century ago, starting with just 800 sq. ft. and two employees, supplementing its growing audio-visual services with greeting-card sales. Today, the third-generation business has expanded to nearly 30,000 sq. ft. and bustles with more than 100 employees ready to handle technological snafus, restore and enlarge photographs, and rent out projector screens for pre-vacation family briefings. The knowledgeable IT workers—who count ten Apple-certified specialists among their ranks—equip clients with computers and technology from all major brands, including products such as the iPad and iPhone, and sweep in to rescue data after crashes or fix keyboards after soda spills. Their photo and video specialists outfit shutterbugs and cinephiles with digital cameras and repair cracked lenses for manufactures such as Sony, Kodak, Canon, and Panasonic. The staff can even help safely dispose of used and broken equipment, collecting old computers, TVs, circuit boards, and cameras for transport to a hazardous waste facility, to ensure old technology doesn’t wind up in landfills or hitchhike its way back home.

  • Global Flight Research
The sight of an airplane soaring through the air in the modern era is so unsurprising that most of us never stop to think about how tons of metal are even able to take flight. Not so for the technicians and trainers at Global Flight Research. Their bread and butter is getting folks safely airborne. They provide maintenance and repair for privately owned aircraft, as well as training for aspiring pilots. To that end, they employ flight simulators, especially when teaching advanced strategies to experienced pilots. In addition to the Red Bull planes that have a timed simulator course, Global Flight Research uses the Beechcraft G36/1000, Cessna 182RG, Piper Seneca II, Beechcraft G58/1000, and Extra 300 in their simulator. In that environment, students can safely take on dangerous situations, such as dealing with Upset or Unusual Attitude scenarios and the terrifying discovery that your co-pilot doesn't like Cheers.
