  • Texas Renaissance Festival
For eight weekends in the fall, a troupe of performing fairies, knights, royal personas, and jugging fools set up camp on the 55-acre grounds of the Texas Renaissance Faire. For 38 years, the Festival has re-created the 16th century’s appealing combination of simplicity and grandeur with more than 200 daily performances of live music, acrobatic comedies, and jousting. Actors portraying different levels of society—such as the English court and the pirates—roam the lolling landscape in character while performing comedic and informative bits including “Sound and Fury,” a Shakespearean vaudeville. At noon the Grande Marche parade catapults performers from the Globe Stage for a stroll throughout the park as they advertise their acts in a high-toned procession. On a less precise schedule, craftsmen concoct tangible marvels with skills of glassblowing and blacksmithing, while food purveyors wander the beaten paths or call from their booths, selling fare that ranges from sugar-coated nuts to roasted turkey legs. At close of day, fireworks light the sky to celebrate the festival's victory over time.

  • Human Rights Walk & Festival
It all started with one Girl Scout. Demme Durrett was just a freshman when she founded the Human Rights Walk & Festival, a gathering that would eventually turn into her Gold Award project and draw more than 2,000 people. At the event's heart is an all-ages and handicapped-accessible walk that gives participants fresh air and an education in the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights via an outdoor exhibit of artwork, posters, and essays that illustrate the U.N.'s 30 Basic Human Rights. But the walk is only the beginning of this outing, which also features live music, guest speakers sharing inspiring stories, and festival activities for the entire family.

  • Space City Con
Hosted across the city from NASA’s Mission Control Center, Space City Con invites fans from Houston and beyond to meet their idols from sci-fi and fantasy movies, films, and print media. Celebrities from beloved franchises drop by to dole out autographs and photo opportunities, in addition to with comic-, anime-, and literature-industry artists and writers. The convention halls rattle with sound of polyhedral dice during ongoing tabletop gaming events, along with the bellows of LARPing elves as they fall from a perfectly executed lightning-bolt spell. Visitors can pay homage to their heroes at fan-film screenings and the yearly Masquerade costume, in which they can show off fandom-inspired cosplay get-ups or purely coincidental Stormtrooper armor.

  • The International Festival
The International Festival is a lot like a U.N. conference—if U.N. conferences had crafts vendors, bounce houses, margaritas, and free Zumba classes. Unfolding in Town Green Park on October 19, the all-day event celebrates the community's diverse culture with different foods, arts, and other fall-themed activities. Attendees can take their taste buds on a tour around the globe by testing cuisines from Italy, Spain, the Caribbean, and beyond. Adults can also become part of Margarita Madness and vote for the festival's best concoction, and kids can burn off energy while zipping down giant slides and playing games. A wide range of artistic talents will be on display, too, including live bands and crafts vendors showcasing locally made masterpieces.

  • The Woodlands Margarita Festival
The Woodlands Margarita Festival welcomes the warm temperatures of spring with that favorite libation of paradise, the margarita. Attendees can take their margs frozen or on the rocks, with salt or without, and in a variety of exotic flavors, ranging from the classic lime to jalapeño, cucumber apple, and even chocolate. While they're all made with 100% agave tequilas by a mixologist in an "I'm on Island Time" T-shirt, just one particularly delicious concoction will be crowned the Best Margarita in The Woodlands by attendees' votes. It's sure to be a suitable beverage to sip while enjoying live music and sampling all of the flavorful foods available for purchase.
