The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results.
High above the Atlantic?s lapping waves, helmeted figures scale vertical rock walls. Undaunted, they surmount challenging obstacles and overhangs, building anchors and belaying while learning technical skills from a beginning level. They feel safe with the knowledge that they?re being overseen by American Mountain Guide Association or Professional Climbing Instructors Association-accredited climbers. Director Jon Tierney??who also boasts an international guiding license from the IFMGA??leads Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School?s faculty of certified and experienced guides as they usher first-time and experienced explorers up majestic rock faces, snow-covered cliffs, and frozen waterfalls. Company guides frequently showcase their comfort in varied terrain as well, having applied their climbing skills on film sets to set up safety rigging for Shutter Island.
Guides provide mentorship during multi-day mountaineering trips to distant mountains, and lead day trips to share pivotal climbing skills that help students scale a range of icy and rocky conditions. In an array of advanced or basic classes, they instruct pupils on principles of anchoring, top roping, belaying, and sport or lead climbing?imbuing them with the skills to scale mountainsides or be the first to reach the top of a wedding cake. Instructors also teach students mid-climb rescues, such as how to deal with medical issues and make improvised ascents, or metamorphosize into an instructor.
Having taught upward of 5,000 golfers—including more than 20 PGA and LPGA touring professionals—Shaun Webb commands an instructional style that improves students’ consistency from tee to green. Shaun wields certifications in golf fitness and swing biomechanics, which can be incorporated into his lessons for both adults and juniors. He also uses high-speed video to capture the swing during individual instruction and will even tag along with golfers on the course to coach course-management decisions, assist in shot selection, and prevent mid-match swims in water hazards.
Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing with the Stars' multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 600 calories with each go-round.
It may not seem like the deep blue at this small aquarium, but when you lean closer to one of the tanks, you're seeing into an entire aquatic world with a big message of ocean conservation, research, and education. Maine State Aquarium exhibits a selection of the same plants and animals found in the nearby ocean, including colorful anemones and wolffish with long, sharp teeth. Local fishermen bring in everything from 17-pound lobsters, while tide-pooling classes take kids down to explore the rocky shore. Back inside, a touch tank allows guests to handle horseshoe crabs, sharks, sea stars, and sand dollars as staff help direct and answer questions about the creatures.
