  • Discover Outdoors
Thinking of the city rarely calls images of fog-ringed mountains and wolf-filled forests to mind, but Discover Outdoors?formerly known as Outdoor Bound?turns these scenes into reality. Owner, avid outdoorsman, and eight-time marathon runner Kirk Reynolds makes sure of it. He and a staff of experts?each a licensed trail guide and Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT?temper the stress of city living with day trips to nearby natural enclaves and weekend camping excursions. The getaways thrill with activities such as hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and horseback riding. International trips, meanwhile, quench a thirst for life-defining adventures beyond trips to the grocery store during peak Saturday hours. Among them: hikes up famed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, treks to Machu Picchu in Peru, and jaunts through the Canadian Rockies. Some of the journeys even grant travelers the opportunity to fundraise for a worthy cause as they explore.

  • The SWEAT Party
Most fitness centers house treadmills, free weights, and studios with fitness classes—but The SWEAT Party is different. Instead of relying on that same familiar set-up, the establishment (which grew directly from the dance club scene) draws DJs, eclectic fitness trainers, and cutting-edge choreographers to its classes. There, each session or party leads revelers in pulse-pounding workouts focused on fun, wellness, and not stepping on fellow students' feet. SWEAT also hosts a quarterly SWEAT party which incorporates a power hour, dance party, and Wellness Lounge where participants can head for massages, facials, blood pressure screenings, and anonymous HIV testing.

The events held at these diverse locations range from culinary workshops on topics such as sushi-making and moonshine-tasting, to adventurous excursions with whitewater rafting or kayaking, to laid-back themed party cruises. For many outings, luxury transportation is provided.

  • Sky Club Fitness & Spa
An intense workout can lead to an endorphin rush. Members of Sky Club Fitness & Spa get this rush—along with a rush from elevation—every time they work out near a window. That's because the gym looks out over the New York City skyline. This epic vista follows them as they step out onto the sky deck to lounge in the sun. On the top floor, windows peek out at the horizon near an Olympic-size saltwater pool. In the lower floors, members work out on rows of cardio machines and free weights—alone, with friends, or under the guidance of a personal trainer. They also forge muscles during group fitness classes that range from cycling to boxing and unpacking heavy boxes. After a tough workout, they gather quietly in the European bath to detox or ease their lactic acid buildup with a massage.

  • Golf Club at Chelsea Piers
As part of the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex, located at the historic Chelsea Piers, the Golf Club perches over the same port that once welcomed ships into New York City. Now, golfers tee up in the driving range's 52 heated and weather-protected stalls, which overlook the glinting waters of the Hudson River. Automatic tee-up systems position balls for launch across the 200-yard, net-enclosed fairway. A putting green allows patrons to improve their short game, and two Full Swing simulators encourage them to take hacks in virtual environs, transporting them to famous courses across the country or fifth-grade birthday parties where they missed the piñata. Children and adults alike can enlist in Golf Club at Chelsea Piers' classes, which stratify students by experience level. The coaching staff includes PGA and LPGA professionals, and sessions take place in a 2,000-square-foot teaching academy.

The Battery Park City offers a sunlit fitness center, 25-yard pool, and a wood floor gymnasium with open gym time and pick-up basketball. After battling on the court, members can refuel at the juice bar.
