We spoke with Jack Macaluso—Regional Social Media and Web Coordinator at Beauty Schools of America—about how the academies prepare students for careers in the real world and why it's important for the schools to give back to their communities.
On the schools' mission
Above all else, Jack says that the schools "try to focus and harness the students' creativity," while giving them all of the experience and practical skills they need not simply to be prepared to enter the work force, but to succeed and thrive. The relatively lengthy training programs ensure that aspiring stylists, cosmetologists, makeup artists, barbers, and massage therapists fully understand the intricacies of their chosen specialty, as well as what they need to do to continue advancing their future career according to Jack.
On the role of the instructors
With a roster of instructors that includes industry professionals with international spa and salon experience, Beauty Schools of America strives to give attendees a broad view of the numerous options open to them. Jack is also clear that the teachers' guidance isn't limited to classroom environments. When the advanced-level students are allowed hone their talents by performing treatments for actual clients, "an instructor or two will always be there to assist and answer questions," he says.
On the products that the students use during treatments
Students use brand name products like Moroccanoil, Sojourn, Nioxin, and others. Working alongside their instructors at modern service stations, these stylists use these products to craft en vogue cuts, color, styling and therapeutic practices.
On the schools' charitable involvement
Beauty Schools of America embraces opportunities to give back to its communities while providing real-world experience for students at the same time. Jack goes on to describe events where the schools' aspiring barbers and cosmetologists performed complimentary services for underprivileged residents, and he mentions one specific occasion when massage students provided free treatments for community members who participated in a bike ride dedicated to raising awareness about multiple sclerosis.

Soothing spa treatments and medical-grade aesthetics procedures get equal billing at Divine Spa. That means that clients can expect diverse options ranging from aromatherapy body scrubs to fat-reducing cavitation treatments. All of these services are performed under the guidance of Jacqueline Lorenzo, who studied paramedical skincare and received extra training at the Society of Dermatology Skin Care Specialists.
Given her background, it's no surprise that the spa's menu offers multiple options to treat common skincare complaints, including European facials, customized lifting treatments, and acid peels. But Divine Spa tends to more than just the exterior. It also pampers the mind with Swedish, deep-tissue, and hot-stone massages that banish common stressors such as muscle pain and nagging thoughts about which tiara to wear to the coronation ceremony.
In her 20 years in the aesthetics field, Virginia Garcia has built quite a multifaceted resume. She has not only worked as a medical aesthetician and permanent-makeup artist, but also as a journalist who has written articles on the topics of nutrition and professional aesthetics. Not surprisingly then, her service menu at LunaSkin is expansive, incorporating everything from lash extensions to body-contouring treatments, including ultrasonic cavitation and herbal wraps.
She performs her longtime specialties, too, of course, with facials that often include such add-ons as radio-frequency treatments, ultrasound therapy, and buckets of glitter, as well as permanent makeup for the brows, eyes, and lips.
The licensed cosmetologists at Mommy & Me Salon dote on mother-daughter duos with services such as mani-pedis, facials, and haircuts. Little ladies snuggle up in rose-colored terry-cloth bathrobes before lounging in pink pedicure chairs adorned with purple butterfly wings. Staffers also offer spa packages and host parties at the salon, where pink and purple walls shelter guests and ward off icky boy cooties. When they aren't pampering princesses, staffers work with nonprofit organizations and raise money for college scholarships by donating their services.
