Unlike having bicycles, apartments, and guard dogs, having many small plates can be just as effective as one big one. Munch on multiple options with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of tapas and non-alcoholic drinks at Cloud Nine Martini and Tapas Bar in Baxter Village in Fort Mill.
The chefs at Cloud Nine Martini and Tapas Bar sling an array of 18 interesting tapas in an intimate space often energized with live music. Patrons can crush flat-earth theories by devouring a flatbread pizza with its continents of prosciutto, roma tomatoes, and blue cheese ($9). Steak bites with horseradish sauce squash meaty appetites ($10) alongside cherry peppers stuffed with piquant goat cheese ($6). Local resident Susan Shaffer comes in to prepare her signature Cajun crab cakes from a family recipe passed down through eight decades ($10). Meanwhile, shrimp-and-grit cocktails ($10) combine the comfort of Grandma's shrimp and grits with the bold ingenuity of Grandma’s cocktails.
Though this Groupon is not valid for alcohol, 50 different martinis slide across the sleek surface of Cloud Nine's blue-lit bar. Live music sometimes suffuses a lounge of black leather sofas and leaks through the doors to outside tables. Saturday night, a DJ fills the bar with bumping beats and lights to accompany the tapas and suggest creative chewing rhythms.
Cloud 9 Martini & Tapas Bar
At Cloud 9 Martini & Tapas Bar, conversation passes between friends alongside tastes of 45 cold, sweet, or bitter martinis and 18 shareable tapas plates. A blue-lit, martini-shaped bar acts as a stage for mixologists’ concoctions to enthrall eyes and tongues with fruity, chocolaty, and gentlemanly flavors. The Baxterini’s classic recipe of Beefeater gin, vermouth, and olive juice gains approving nods from traditionalists, whereas the Smores replicates a summer treat—complete with flaming marshmallow—without the hassles of camping or starting a bonfire on your kitchen table. To expand a martini-centric evening, Cloud 9 also serves up handmade Chimay beer as well as SweetWater and Turbodog craft brews.
Around the rest of the lounge, sofas and chairs stacked with pillows serve as a convivial perch where guests share tapas. Cherry peppers pop with goat cheese and prosciutto, and quesadillas mix sweet and savory with a dollop of mango chutney atop a filling of apple and brie. On Saturday, DJs accompany bites with energy from their decks, infusing the space with up-tempo beats for dancing or karate montages.
