I was wondering before I bought. Do you have experience shooting couples? I’d love to do a cute just married shoot with my new husband in Piedmont Park sometime this winter or early spring, but we’re not the most photogenic or comfortable with figuring out our own poses.
Also, with the dvd does that include the rights to print the pictures?
Thank you

josie n.

can well behaved dogs be substituted for children — photographed with their loving human parents?

Kristin D.

Do you do “Head Shots” for actors?

Tara B.

Do you do bridal pictures?

Jamie P.

We have three dogs, would you photograph them with my husband and I?

the dvd of images…will they be hi-res, or just low-res proofs?
thanks!
amy

Nicole G.

I have the same question as Ann…Will you shoot couples?

Dana D.
Merchant

Ann F.- YES! I have a lot of experience photographing couples, even those that think that they are not photogenic. :-) Sometimes those can be the most easiest people to work with because they give you full control and allow you to guide them through the entire shoot. All of your poses will not be rehearsed. I strive to take pictures that look natural that will reflect your personality! I hope to meet you!

Dana D.
Merchant

Nicole-YES! I love to photograph couples as well! You can checkout my website at www.DanaDawesPhotography.com and under Galleries, you will find an Adult Link that will show you some of my work. Thanks!

Dana D.
Merchant

Josie N.- YES! Well behaved and non aggressive breeds can be substituted. I just recent shot a Chinese Shar Pei, as part of a maternity session and it was very fun and the pictures came out VERY nice. Pets are welcomed.

Dana D.
Merchant

Kristin-YES! I also can provide head shots you under this same promotion.

Dana D.
Merchant

Tara B.-You can use this promotion for engagement photos.

Dana D.
Merchant

Jamie P-Yes! As long as your dogs are well behaved and trained, I would love to photograph them!

Dana D.
Merchant

Amy M.-Images are provided on a High Resolution CD and will be formatted for printing.

Thanks Dana! I am so excited! My mom has been begging for some family shots for ages. Can’t wait to meet you!

Dana D.
Merchant

Amy M.- I look forward to meeting you as well! I promise that it will be painless! LOL

Amy E.

sounds great, dana! just to beat a dead horse, can you tell us what size of prints we could make from the high-res images on the CD? i just want to confirm that i could make at least a 8×10 or 11×14, suitable for framing.

CE F.

I’ve never purchased anything on Groupon before. Just did. :-) How to I get the actual “coupon,” or do I just get in touch with you and you will have my info? I’m looking forward to my shoot.
Thanks, Claire

Elizabeth L.

Dana, Groupon says we should make an online reservation, but your website says we should email or call you.

I signed up for an appt through the online reservation thing, and verified it (through a code it text-messaged me), and I also got an email saying my appt is confirmed. But the time slot is still showing available on the calendar.

So- should we be emailing you, or scheduling online?

elizabeth, if you click on the time slot you picked and try to book it, i bet it shows booked. that’s what happened with mine anyway :) hope that helps!

Rod J.

I have a serious question here. A couple of months ago another photographer had a similar deal and her offer was capped at 2,000 groupons (Sara Esther Photography). It was a nightmare – read the topic thread, it was pure hell. There is no way on earth she can complete all of those, even working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I’m interested, but want to know what your cap is. If it’s to large then this is doomed to fail. Is it a much smaller number?

Dana D.
Merchant

Amy E.- You can print up to a 16 × 20 with the images that you will receive on cd. Thanks!

Dana D.
Merchant

CE F.- While logged into Groupon, click on My Stuff and your Groupons will appear right there and you can print them off. Thanks! I look forward to meeting you!

Kim B.

I saw your answer to Ann F’s question about couples, but i didn’t see an answer to the second part of her question, “Also, with the dvd does that include the rights to print the pictures?”

I also have the same question. I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully working with you soon!

Dana D.
Merchant

Elizabeth L.-If you received an email confirmation, then it will show that appointment as booked. You will receive a second email confirmation personally from me as well as I go through confirming that there aren’t any scheduling conflicts. Thanks!

Victor G.

Kim – please read all the answers. In one she states that the CD will be formatted for printing. In another she tells that the image will allow a 16×20 print.

That means you can print the pictures.

Dana D.
Merchant

Kim B.- YES! You will be given a release form from me that will allow you to take the picture to be printed. I look forward to meeting you!

Dana D.
Merchant

Rod J.- I understand your concern and I do have a cap currently set that is lower than the previous photographer. Preparation is key, and I have been preparing for this day for months and I will do everything that I can to ensure that everything goes as smooth as possible.

Tracey H.

SO excited!! I responded too late with the previous offer for a similar deal, so knew to jump quickly on this one. I loved looking at your website and look forward to using this Groupon I’ve just purchased. THANKS! :)

Kim B.

When can we start setting appointments?

Amy E.

would you travel past an hour and if so what is the additional fee? i’m thinking of callaway gardens…

Can sessions be scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays?

Stephanie B.

I am currently expecting a baby girl with a due date of 12/21/10. I would love to have newborn pictures taken but want them fairly soon after she is born. Before I buy, do you have any availability between Christmas & new years? I actually live very close to e. Piedmont (near Wheeler HS).

Dana D.
Merchant

Tracey H-Thanks! I look forward to meeting you as well.

Sorry for so many questions.

Are the photos photoshopped or just slightly edited? Also does the CD also include the original photos?

Dana D.
Merchant

Kim B.-You can schedule your appointment starting today. The best way to schedule an appointment is to call or to send an email to dana@danadawesphotography.com and request 3 dates/times in the event the one you are requesting is unavailable. Also, please indicate if you will be coming to my studio, need a suggestion, or if you have a place in mind. You will then receive an email confirmation confirming your appointment.

Dana D.
Merchant

Ann E.-Unfortunately, I would not be able to go to Callaway Gardens.

Dana D.
Merchant

Ann F-Sessions can be scheduled on Saturday or Sunday.

Rebekah H.

Hi, I didn’t see any on your site, so you don’t do boudoir photography, do you?

Kacie K.

What kind of camera do you use?

Dana D.
Merchant

Kacie-I shoot with a Nikon Camera. I have 3 different models. D40, D5000 and a D90.

The Groupon states that you can have up to 2 per person. Could this be on two different photo shoots?

Cherie O.

Hi Dana, I’m interested in some photos of my 4-month-old as well as some photos of me nursing him. Are you comfortable with that and have you done this before?

Dana D.
Merchant

Rebekah H-I also do boudoir portraits, mostly at my studio. I do not have any posted on my site as they are more intimate and private. Thanks!

Dana D.
Merchant

Jenna-Yes, this can be two different photo shoots and redeemed on two different dates.

Kacie K.

Do you know at what number this will be sold out?

Cheryl G.

I noticed most of your photos on your site are B/W. Will you do both B/W and color during the shoot? Also, how long after the shoot does it take to get the CD?

Dana D.
Merchant

Cherle O.-YES! I love to capture intimate moments such as this. That would be great and yes I have taken shots like this before!

victor

I am looking to get family portraits/informal pictures for when the entire family comes in for Thanksgiving. In total there will be 9 adults and 3 kids under 2. So a total of 12 individuals. Will this be ok for the Groupon? Thanks

Dana D.
Merchant

Cheryl G.-I combine a variety of images in both black and white and color. You should receive your cd within 7-10 days after you have selected your free 8 × 10. You can visit my site at www.danadawesphotography.com and click on Groupon link for more information. Thanks!

Dana D.
Merchant

Victor-The Groupon is for up to 8 people. Typically there is a charge for each individual thereafter. However, I will waive this fee as long as everyone is prepared and it does not exceed the 1 hour time limit. Thanks!

Monique W.

@Rod, I think things are going well for Sarah despite the nay-sayers on the day of the sale. I have yet to see anyone who has taken pictures post a complaint. I took mine last week and she was wonderful and she seems to have put people in place to make things run smoothly. I have already gotten a “sneak peak” at a few wonderful photos and she promised my disk by early next week. She told me she has done over 200 sessions so far. Leaving 1700 or so more to go and she is still standing!

Dana I purchased your Groupon for a friend. I trust you will do an excellent job as well. All the best.

Michelle W.

I have booked my appointment and purchased my Groupon. I am SUPER excited and cannot wait to meet you Dana. I have two kids and I am really looking forward to getting some wonderful family pictures. Have a wonderful day!

Joseph B.

Dana, I was looking over your calendar and considering October 1st at 5:30pm. My wife and I are in Douglasville. What happens if you have your 4pm on the other side of Atlanta. Will you be able to get to us by 5:30? I like the online schedule option, but I can see there being problems with the logistics on this.

Thanks, great work btw!

Dana D.
Merchant

Stephanie B.-YES! I have availability! After you purchase your Groupon, please call my office to schedule an appointment and we will get you scheduled! Thanks!

Nina H.

Hi Dana, will you drive to Cumming ? I’m at exit 13 and GA 400.

Dana D.
Merchant

Monique W.-Thank you for purchase! I will be sure to deliver! :-)

Beth M.

@Victor G
I have seen your name and face on here so many times. You are a very negative person. Is Groupon all you have in your life. You should try Myspace or Facebook. By the way the ad that ran yesterday for the facials I bought 2. I also went by there and met both the owners. They are very nice ladies who really didn’t deserve the comments you posted. Shame on you!!

Dana D.
Merchant

Michelle W.-Thanks Michelle! I look forward to meeting you and your family as well!

Dana D.
Merchant

Joseph B.-While the scheduling system is an option, the best way to schedule an appointment is via email (dana@danadawesphotography.com) or by phone at 770-575-5706. This way we can setup the location and etc., and avoid issues as you have mentioned. Thanks!

Rebekah H.

Thanks for answering my question! One more… approximately how many photos would be on the disk?

Dana D.
Merchant

Nina H.-Yes. I will come to Cumming! Hope to meet you soon!

timi m.

I’m so uber excited, I paid up immediately I saw the email . I’ll call to book a session for myself and my 2yr old. Can’t wait!

Dana D.
Merchant

Rebekah-I am camera happy. LOL. With that being said, depending on if there are any breaks in the session or clothing changes you can expect to receive anywhere between 25 – 40 images.

Dana D.
Merchant

Timi M.-Thanks for your purchase! I look forward to meeting you and your son! Thanks again!

Rob M.

It’s amazing how many times I have passed up a groupon due solely to the description groupon writes for each deal. As a company highlighted on groupon I’d be upset with what they write and seeing how juvenile it is. some people would think the company actually put that as their description and would shy away thinking that they’re too unprofessional…“Put a paperweight on your reminiscences with professionally snapped portraiture that can elevate the charm of any mantle, hallway, or sturdy sweater vest.”…just my $0.02.

Dana D.
Merchant

Beth-Thank you for your support!

Rob M.

But Dana, I’m in for one regardless of groupon’s description of your services. This is one time that I’ll ignore their writing : )

Dana D.
Merchant

Rob M.-Thank you for your purchase and I look forward to meeting with you! :-)

Rob M.

Dana, looking forward to it…it won’t be until around May, we’re expecting in early April so it will be for the little one : )

Jennifer L.

Dana – is it even possible to get a holiday photo session at this point? I looked at your online reservation calendar and whatever was available on the weekend is already taken. I have tried to call your phone number, but it rings and then switches to a busy signal. Know you are swamped – just need to know if I should use my session for another time – thanks!

CELESTE M.

Hi, can I purchase 2 groupons for my own use? I would love to take a family photo, but I also have a Son in need of Senior Pics…..decisions…decisions….

CELESTE M.

Okay, I found my answer. I read an earlier q&a between Jenna and Dana. Great!!!! I’ve purchased 2, and I can’t wait.

Dana D.
Merchant

Jennifer L-If you can’t get through on the phone, please send me an email to dana@danadawesphotography.com and include three dates and times that you are interested in. Thanks!

Dana D.
Merchant

Celeste-Great! I look forward to meeting you!

SUSAN

Dana,
How do you feel about photographing horse and rider?
Thanks.

Dana D.
Merchant

Susan! I would love to do a photo shoot with a horse and rider. I photographed a birthday party that was held at a stables in May and that was exciting. I look forward to meeting you!

Jennifer L.

Thanks Dana – there should be an email waiting for you.

Jennifer L.

Thanks Dana – there should be an email waiting for you.

Dana D.
Merchant

Jennifer L.-Thank you! I look forward to meeting you!!

victor

Thanks for the response. I am bought one and look forward to working with you. I sent an email for an appointment! Thanks

inna

Hi Dana

Sincerely

Thanks Dana….
So we are able to print from the Cd if want to in the future?

Dana D.
Merchant

Victor-Thank you for your business! We will be in touch with you very soon!

Dana D.
Merchant

Inna-Thank you for your interest! You are allowed to purchase 2 sessions. Purchasing two sessions, you can either use them for two different dates, or if you want to to do a 2 hour session, then you can purchase 2, and I can book you for a two hour session. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Dana D.
Merchant

Leslie S.-Thank you! You will receive a photograph release form that you will be able to provide to the company that you order your images from. This will allow you to order prints at your convenience. Thanks!

How far out can we schedule a session? I would love to document my daughter turning one but that wont be until May 28th 2011. Is that possible? thanks!!

Dana D.
Merchant

Trisha! I am scheduling appointments for the 12 months! It is best to schedule now. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I use Costco a lot for canvas pics and thought maybe i could use one of these for a gift in the future?

Anna L.

Hi Dana ,
I also live in Marietta , i booked our shoot for oct 6th (couple), i was just wondering if you any spots where you like to have the shoot near by? i picked a weekday so that anywhere we picked would be “empty”

I just bought & have tried calling & it rings once & I get a busy signal. I have also sent an email w/ the 3 dates of my choice & hope that will be able to use these for our holiday photos. I tried signing up thru your website but it says the sessions are already booked.

Dana D.
Merchant

Leslie S.-Costo does a pretty good job!

Dana D.
Merchant

Anna L.- I love photographing at East Cobb Park located in Marietta off of Roswell Road. This park has wonderful scenery! The benefit of shooting at this location is that if it starts to rain, my office is only about 7 minutes away and we could continue the shoot there.

Dana D.
Merchant

Lindsay-We are experiencing high call volume as well as emails. There are two phone numbers you can call, 770-575-5706 or 678-778-1980. If you sent an email, we will also reply to it in the order that it was received. Thank and I look forward to meeting with you!

Julia G.

i sent an email via your website contact section but thought i would post here as well. was wondering if the person limit could be waived for a family portrait—no clothing changes will be necessary—feel free to email or call me at the information i provided on your website. thanks :-)

SP

Groupon, you are dealing with a thief here. This photographer does not own all the photos on her website.

I looked at her website and realized that as a pro myself, her lighting and conversions didn’t match up. I then took one of her images off her website and un-distorted it, and then placed it through a recognition software that brought up this - http://morgaineowensphotography.com/?p=924THIS is the owner of the photograph, not Dana Dawes. I would suggest you refund the money to all of these people because this person is using photos that aren’t hers to try to bring in clients. In other words, she’s a fake photographer.

SP

and I have screen shots if you want them to prove this in case she deletes her images. Tell me where to email.

Jennifer D.

Hi Dana,
I bought my fiance and his daughter a previous groupon for flight lessons, Would you be open to photographing them at Dekalb County Airport. I thought it would be great if I could also surprise them with documenting them in plane? Is this a possible location for you to join us? I look forward to hearing a reply before I purchase. I understand you guys are swamped so thank you for your assistance.
Jenn

SP

We’ve located another one of her maternity images as belonging to Tanya Shields.

Hilary C.

Hello Dana!
I want to purchase this groupon for an actor friend of mine who needs professional head shots. Do you have experience shooting head shots on location? Also, would the cd that you provide allow my friend to print out photos himself from a home printer or from a kodak picture kiosk, say at wal-mart? THANKS!!!

SP

Again, Groupon – please respond -- this deal is FRAUDULENT and all 1,000+ who have purchased this groupon need to know they are dealing with a FRAUDULENT BUSINESS!!!

Please start checking your photographers before you allow them to do groupons. You guys seriously have to stop putting fake businesses up on these groupons!

Betty D.

Dana do you know of any Pumpkin Patches near your area that are open through the end of November? I would love a location like this for photos with my boyfriend. We will be booking our shoot soon. :)

Dana D.
Merchant

SP.-Let me assure you that I am not a thief. Many of my pictures have been taken in other states as well as many that I took while studying in Europe this past Spring.

SP

Groupon – one major clue that the business is fraudulent is if they offer a deal like this, that cannot be physically fulfilled by a true professional photographer. I’ve seen these deals pop up countless times on groupon, and no one is verifying that these are legitimate businesses that can fulfill their promises. It is physically impossible for a pro photog full time to do 1,000 sessions in a year (and on location at that).

Dana D.
Merchant

Betty-There is a pumpkin patch at Cagle Farms and we could get some excellent shots there. I have done many photo shoots there.

Dana D.
Merchant

Hillary-Yes I have taken several head shots in the past, for models as well as for salons. Thanks!

SP

So Tanya Shields is okay with you using her maternity image?

http://www.tanyashields.net/2010/03/picture-perfect-halifax-maternity-photographer/

How dare you steal images belonging to other professional photographers and then try to pass these off as your own. The photography community is HUGE. I have made one of the other photographers aware that you have stolen her image.

SP

I know Tanya Shields, and I’m going to alert her to this. She can sue you for stealing her image and claiming it as her own. Go read copyright laws.

And Morgaine Owens is ok with you stealing her image:

http://morgaineowensphotography.com/?p=924

SP

She cleared her images off of her website, but I have the screenshots. I have no problem emailing them to the owners of the photos or to groupon, just tell me where to email them. Screenshots are PROOF of what has taken place. In case you don’t know what screenshots are, they are copies of your website.

kdh

While you are deleting all of your galleries, you might want to also take the stolen image off of your splash page. Everyone already has screen shots anyway….but of course, you are not a thief.

Sarah

*FRAUD*FRAUD*FRAUD*

Do not purchase this groupon!! This photographer has STOLEN images from other photographers to show as her own work. Your photos will not look anything like those on her website, that is, IF she follows through at all.

Dana….if you are a professional photographer, how do you have time to be here answering all the questions? Shouldn’t you be tending to clients?? Oh wait…you don’t have any!

DON’T GET SCAMMED BY THIS GROUPON DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve already reported you to groupon, next I’m reporting you to the PPA. How dare you steal people’s money by trying to pass yourself off as aprofessional.

Sarah

WOW!! So you removed the fraudulent images off your website, wow, so almost EVERY image in your galleries was ripped off from another photographer! WHAT A SCAMMER.

Jodie O.

Janine. The PPA is already on to it… I just finished emailing someone ;)

Groupon, as a full-time professional photographer myself, I have to say, this is really really something you need to reevaluate. When looking at these “deals”, if she were to fulfill all of these portrait sessions, it would take her years, but even then, she would not be making even $2/hour off of her work after you take a cut. Why would you even think that someone is not fraudulent if they are offering a deal like that?

Please reconsider allowing photographers to do this, or at least please verify that they are in good standings with places like the PPA. If they aren’t even registered with the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) you should reconsider allowing such a deal to be placed.

Becky B.

If you click on the proofing tab of her website, there is a newborn photo that she also stole from Tanya Shields. 3rd one down on this entry:
http://www.tanyashields.net/category/newborn/page/3/

Dana D.

Let me assure everyone that I have rights to the photos on my site. I am not sure who SP is, but someone is trying to sabotage my success. My website has not been hacked and all of a sudden I am receiving all of these comments. I am currently working with my hosting company to work through this. But I can assure you that I am NOT a fraud.

Jodie O.

and… not only the photographs were stolen, but she stole her wording of the “about me” section from Kristina Young Photography.

Nice.

Groupon, this is pathetic.

will we get our money back?

Becky B.

So one person is trying to sabotage you huh? Photographers stick together and we protect one another. When we see you stealing, you WILL be called out. How embarrassing for you that it happened very publicly on Groupon.

So if you have the rights to all your images, then you have no reason to take them down. The only reason they were removed so quickly is because THEY ARE NOT YOURS! You’re better off apologizing not only to the photographers that you ripped off but also the customers that you are frauding.

Erika

I was going to purchase this groupon when I saw it this morning (around 6:45 am) – I saw all the images in the galleries. Now a lot of the images are missing. I think the fact that they are gone speaks for its self – if they are yours then why delete them? I’m not a professional photographer but dabble in it and even I could tell that certain shots differed greatly in regards to the level of skill/light conversions from others on the site. No purchase for me today.

Sarah

Trisha F. Please contact Groupon and tell them what a scam this is. Hopefully you can get your money back!

kdh

I think you should save the money you get from Groupon, you will likely be paying it to the real creators of those images. I am sure the courts will not like the fact that not only did you take them, but you made money by using them.

Dana — you’ve got to be kidding me. You have rights to the photographs you stole? Someone hacked your website? How about the truth — you saw a way to get some quick money by putting up a website and swiping other people’s images. You have so little knowledge of website templates that you couldn’t even figure out how to size them so they fit correctly.

She got her camera last Thursday, took images from actual photographers, put her name on them and messed up the aspect ratio so they couldn’t be detected. Theft is rampant in this industry but she was good at it – except for the groupon to a giant market thing. Glad to see Groupon still selling it though, pull in every dollar you can guys!

You have rights to the photos you stole? really? And your website was hacked? Next thing you’ll be blaming it on an assistant. Dana — you are just a thief who thought you could make a quick buck on groupon by stealing. And groupon people, a word of advice — if it looks too good to be true, it usually is!

Wait, not last Thursday, last SATURDAY (her blog was set up then and there is no record of her site). This isn’t a case of a wanna be (crappy) photographer this is actually a case of nothing more than scam. This is actually low for Groupon’s standards!

To everyone wondering about refunds…. you can go into “My Stuff” and your “My Groupons” and then edit/cancel your order. Your card shouldn’t even be charged.

Actually, my cancellation confirmation email says it should be refunded in 5-7 business days. So you’re card might be charged initially.

How nice that groupon is still letting people purchase this!

Andre M.

Let me say that Dana Dawes has been my photographer for 3 years now and I have given her permission to use the photos that she took on her site. She is very professional, thorough, great with kids and I have been pleased with using her 3 times a year. I can assure you that she is a great photographer. -Andre

I. M.

I was able to successfully cancel my order…thanks Courtney C. Thanks everyone else for catching this (especially SP). My hope is that Groupon does the right thing.

Sarah

For those wanting refunds, check this out: http://groublogpon.com/cities/the-groupon-promise/

And then email support@groupon.com to tell them what a scam this is and hopefully there will be some very serious ramifications for fraud of this kind.

Andre M: Great photographers don`t steal images from other photographers and try to pass them off as their own. She`s been caught now she`s scrambling to get rid of the evidence. But it`s too late.

Don’t forget to remove the rest of the photos taken by other photographers from your facebook page as well. And yes, she does actually take some pictures on her own – the really bad ones left are her original artwork.

Andre M.

Her site was designed, with a new template and a new blog. Is that a bad thing to give your website a face lift?

Andre M: Of course not. Many photographers do that. They just don`t steal the work of other photographers and place it on their sites and claim it as their own. THAT is the difference.

Amber O.

Good try Andre! No one is buying it…give it up!!

Tasha W.

I have also used Dana Dawes Photography several times and she has always provided me with excellent images and is very good. I purchased two of these.

She was so good that you only purchased two images?

kdh

Let’s put it this way…if you scrolled through her galleries and an image stuck out as great…it wasn’t hers. If it was gray scale black and white or had selective coloring…not quite in focus, you were likely seeing her work. As a consumer, you should know what you were buying. What she was selling and what you are buying are not even close.

Andre M.

No. I purchased more than two images. I purchased two sessions.

Did this happen the last time there was a groupon like this? I remember one being posted a couple of months ago

Nvm! You meant you purchased two Groupons. So Andre M and Tasha W are the same person??? Because I was referring to her.

Becky B.

haha, I think Dana, Andre, and Tasha W are all the same person…Andre just answered a question that was directed to Tasha W. LOL Give it up, Dana!

Sarah

Oh….the life of a fauxtographer…now all the friends, siblings, and cousins come out of the woodwork to say what a great photographer she is! Really? Do you feel good having worked with someone who is a THIEF? If so, I guess your idea of ethics and mine are way different. Nope, I’m sure it’s that you’re probably too cheap to pay for PROFESSIONAL photographs.

Yes, and don’t forget to check out her Facebook fan page, lots of STOLEN images there as well. I’m sure you’ll notice them, they are the ones that actually look good.

Sarah G.

Wow, I think the increasingly nasty comments could stop now. Especially the other Sarah…

So Dana — this photographer: http://www.tanyashields.net/category/newborn/page/3/

is letting you use her photo on your proofing page: http://danadawesphotography.com/index2.php (click proofing)

Wow — you really need to stop lying, call groupon and have them cancel this deal ASAP.

crystal V.

I have been going to Dana for years. She is not a fraud. Her portraits are amazing.

Jennifer C.

Thanks so much to all who alerted us to the fraud taking place. Everyone needs to email Groupon and let them know what is going on so hopefully this doesn’t happen again. Her entire site is a complete scam, including her about me section, which is pathetic! I don’t understand how this slipped under Groupon’s radar! SP, maybe you should work for them, checking out potentially businesses before they sign up!

kdh

uh,oh, Dana…the person who hacked your account now replaced the stolen images with your own work. Crazy that they had access to your images. They also apparently hacked into your facebook account and took the stolen images off there too. I did a screen shot of the senior that was obviously not yours.

Tamera .

Wow.

Groupon, what say you?

grabbing popcorn

In general, a true professional photographer is not going to be offering a groupon deal. (There are exceptions and it would often be someone with a high volume studio that could manage the influx of people). Anyone with a successful business would not sign up for years worth of work at much MUCH less than minimum wage. That is what thousands of sessions is – years worth of work for a small business or single photographer.

So the groupon will be someone new and trying to “get their name out” (of course getting their name out means nothing if you have years of work already lined up) or just complete garbage. I wish groupon would get a handle on things like this.

LOL can I have some popcorn too Tamera?

Sarah G.

I think you all need to get a life! ( or a job… )

Rebekah H.

LoL, I cancelled my order an hour ago, but I’m lovin’ this discussion. Good idea with the popcorn. Where is Groupon? Don’t they have someone watching this board?

Hilary C.

I agree with Sarah G. that the very rude comments should stop. As a groupon user, I come here to ask questions about groupons I am considering purchasing and to read others questions and answers to be aware of the terms of a deal. Once you have shared your expectations of a fraud and decided you don’t want to purchase, you should log off. No one comes here to watch a back and forth written cat fight! To participate in that also looks unprofessional. Just my opinion. Have a great day!

So is this a scam?? How do I request my money back???

Tanya S.

Hi Dana,

With every ounce of professional courtesy that I am able to muster for you……REMOVE MY WORK FROM YOUR WEBSITE.

Immediately.

Tamera .

@ Sarah S – there were instructions above. Just go to your My Gorupons page and “edit” that particular groupon. There will be an option to cancel.

@ Tasha, if you bring something to drink. lol

Kacie K.

I don’t think that groupon is a bad idea for photographers. I have seen other photographers successfully have a groupon but it has a sell out number… Simply for the fact that ya no one can handle this many jobs. Thats is why if you look way back I asked this morning what number does it sell out at.

I can not believe groupon did not do the homework on this one and I hope they offer a refund. This is only making a bad impression for honest photographers who were considering using groupon to boost business.

Tanya S.

And yes, this is a scam.

My name is Tanya Shields. I am a newborn and maternity photographer in Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA.

Apparently Dana thought little ol’ Halifax would be far enough from Atlanta, that I’d never find out. What she didn’t take into consideration was the amount of networking, educating, and online presence one has to develop if they want to even CONSIDER becoming successful.

Do I think I’m known worldwide? No.

But certainly, my work is my own, and recognizable enough to lead me here.

Thank you to Jodie, Tasha and Amber for taking care of business here. ♥

lk

I have been reading this post for the last hour, and i think its hilarious that people are still buying this and groupon isnt closing the deal. and why should the people who are alerting people to the scam get dissed on? I think you guys are right and its totally Dana just creating fake names

Dana D.
Merchant

This is not a scam. I have references that I am more than happy to provide to anyone that would like them. I am currently working with Host Gator, and 2 people using two different IP addresses have hacked into my web account. If the person that hacked into it is on this message board, please know that Host Gator has your IP Address and they have started to look into this. I have taken photos in the U.S. as well as in Europe . Just like other photographers, with the permission of clients, we are able to sell those images. I am currently unable to login to my own site, because someone has reset my password. Therefore, I did not login and delete, add or modify any images on my site. For those wanting references, I am more than willing to provide them.

Julie C.

I tried to go and cancel my order under my stuff and my groupons and there is no link there to edit or cancel… now what? any suggestions?

Emily

I’ve never heard of a photographer’s site being hacked, just to put up photos from other photographers, that’s crazy, and they got your facebook too huh?

Sure Dana. So how do you explain how all those images got on your Facebook business page? Someone was out to get you there too? Own up to it already. It’s pretty sad that you are trying to blame this on a supposed hacker and not just admit that you made a HUGE mistake. You almost got away with it but thanks to the diligence of the photography community, you’ve been caught. Just give it up already.

Jodie O.

I’m so glad you are here, Tanya. I saw this originally on a friend of mine’s facebook, the link to yet another groupon photographer yawn but someone questioned the authenticity of her work. When I saw that there was major differences between nice professional work, and flat out bad-lighting newbie work on her site, I knew the consistency told a story – a story of yet another thief in our industry. It makes me so sad that this goes on, and it goes on all the time.

There is a reason why professionals charge professional prices and don’t tend to throw out groupon ads that would bring us absolutely no revenue. Why do we know better than to do this? Because we are registered legitimate businesses, have business management skills which we had to learn, claim taxes legitimately, and we have accountants and book-keepers to tell us that putting an ad on groupon and making $2/hour is not a successful way to run a business.

Please groupon, reconsider doing these types of deals for photographers. Anyone can pick up a camera, make a website with a template, and a blog with a template, and steal images off of true professional’s websites, and pretend they are theirs. Thankfully, many of us pros have been swiped and stolen from enough that we stick together and help our peers out by alerting them when we see something that has big red fraud flags glaring.

Karrie A.

So the two people who hacked into your site were also able to hack into your Facebook account and remove the same exact photos? Wow talented guys . . . maybe you should hire them to find you some new photos for your website. :D Give it up girl, everyone knows that you are a fraud and what seemed like a small thing (borrowing someone elses work to make you seem more experienced and get your business started with a bang and lots of clients booking) has become a huge pile of smelly poo in your lap.

How nice of the hacker to remove the images and THEN reset your password. Nice try.

Tanya S.

Dana…….IF YOU ARE BEING SINCERE…….call me.

My # is on my website…..I think you know the address.

Jodie O.

Dana… I don’t think you are understanding copyright laws.

If you take a photo, we don’t care where you take it, but you put it on your website, and your client is okay with it. Good for you.

If you take a photo off of other peoples’ websites and put it on your site and claim it as your own AS YOU CLEARLY DID, that is ILLEGAL and can be prosecuted.

Tanya S.

I’m calling to start calling you “Eagle Eyes Jodie” ;)

Karrie A.

Tanya, make sure if she does visit your site that you get her IP address and block her from any further visits!

This is completely absurd that groupon is leaving it open. Tanya, I am so sorry that you are going through this from someone so unprofessional.

Groupon, shame on you for not closing this deal!

Josh at Groupon .

Hey Everyone

Tanya S.

Dana, I will gladly take those references. You can either respond to my phone calls, or respond to my email, or respond to my FB messages……however you like…..just respond. Without the ka-ka.

Tanya S.

Josh, I can be reached quite easily, and await your email/phone call.

I am trying to cancel my Groupon too….I can’t figure out how to do it.

lk

took groupon long enough. i dont believe dana at all…sounds like shes bulling bs outta her bottom to try and cover up the stupid decision she made. boooo.

Nicole M.

Horrified that this “photographer” stole the work of true professionals and then, when caught red-handed, claimed someone “hacked” her website. Really? Really? How convenient. Now, did they hack it and put the STOLEN images on it? Or did they hack it to take the STOLEN images off of it? I am confused.

Tamera .

To those trying to cancel:

At the top of this page, there will be a “My Stuff” tab, on the drop down, go to My Groupons.

There should be something that says “edit purchase” next to this groupon. If it’s not there, not sure what to tell ya. lol Sorry.

But if it’s there, click on it…at the bottom of that page, there should be a link to cancel the purchase.

If you still are having trouble, email Groupon at their support email address – they are great about refunding.

Good luck to all involved!

Tori P.

Isn’t that Tanya’s materbnity picture on her groupon ad???http://www.groupon.com/deals/dana-dawes-photography-atlanta

I don’t buy it at all that her account was hacked. At this point I think she is in way over her head and will say anything to not get the pants sued off of her

Libby C: Try emailing them: support@groupon.com

Nvm Tamera posted how to cancel.

Tanya S.

Dear God in Heaven Tori!!!!! I have NEVER done selective color.

I can’t believe we know each other. LMAO.

Jodie O.
Tori P.

either way- I know I have seen that maternity image with the blocks somewhere and I highly doubt that image is hers as well

Emily

Funny in those screen shot’s the stolen images are watermarked with Dana’s info, guess the hacker did that too?

Andre M.

No. I am not a friend of her’s. Only a client. I have been using her services for years and I have never had an issue with her or her level of work.

Tasha- Thanks, I am not getting the option to cancel it under my account even though my CC was charged. So I will try to email!

I thought something was fishy when she had little to no pictures in her portfolio. Also, the photos that were on there were of the same subjects, very bad lighting, and out of focus.

I have a Nikon Rebel xti, and try to take nice photos of my children with it, and honestly my images are better than what is on her website right now.

Nicole M.

OMG. Cracking up at the images left on her site. They are horrible! My four year old takes better shots with her kiddie camera!

Groupon, do you vet the businesses you work with, at all?

This should be another lesson for all bargain shoppers, if it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is!

Karrie A.

Ok, so I just noticed that all photos are on a DVD, high resolution and ready for printing, so why exactly does anyone need the 20% off any ordered prints?

Jodie O.

All “involved”, have you been notified yet?

Rebekah H.

To add even more: These are photos of her relatives. The little girl shares her last name: Reagan Keane-Dawes.

So Dana, how do you explain the stolen images on your Facebook profile? That was hacked too?

Jig is up, you shouldn’t steal. Not images, not text, not anything.

I feel sorry for those that bought the groupon.

Rebekah H.

To clarify, I’m referring to the photos remaining on the site, rather than the ones that were not hers to begin with.

Tanya S.

I have not been contacted by ANYONE yet…..except other concerned photographers.

Emily

I don’t understand how this ever became a groupon to begin with???

Jodie O.

Don’t hold your breath, Tanya, I doubt you will be contacted. Groupon is getting more and more shady lately.

Karrie A.

Hey, at least it says no longer available. But she sold 1273 of them. U n b e l i e v a b l e!

If Groupon doesn’t refund….they will lose me as a customer, and they will get A LOT of bad press for this!

Tamera .

Just a couple of pennies here….

I don’t necessarily think she’s a “fraud” in the sense that she’s not a photographer. Of course, that can be debated. She may own a camera, probably has taken some pictures…maybe over the last few years. But I don’t think she’s someone who was just going to take money and never do the work.

I think she was a newbie to the biz who, surprisingly, was ballsy enough to advertise on Groupon. And unfortunately for her, she’s probably ruined any future business, period. She probably hoped she could get a ton of new, instant business but most likely would’ve been way in over her head. And for the buying clients, they most likely would not have gotten the quality that was displayed. In that sense, it’s a scam.

It’s obvious that she took other photos to “pad” her site and make her portfolio seem broader than it really is. I’ve seen this many times in my own world (cake art). We’re also a tight-knit group and have come across many who have used photos of work that wasn’t theirs, passing it as their own. And what’s crazy – it’s always the SAME excuse. They were hacked or they have a web designer that used photos they didn’t approve. Sorry, but as a professional and as a business owner (especially one who is going to advertise in such a public manner), you should be very aware of everything on your website. Why wouldn’t you be? If it was hacked, you would’ve noticed that yesterday…the day before…last month. You went as far as to make a page specifically for Groupon users, so why wouldn’t you notice all of the photos that weren’t yours? The excuses do not explain your FB account either. Stop the bleeding here!

It’s embarrassing, surely, but I hope you (Dana) make it right with all. It’s the right thing to do at this point.

I’m not even sure how Groupon would’ve caught that. Besides other pro photographers (or those with a keen eye and frequently view photo sites) – who would’ve known they were not her photos? However, given that the photos were obviously not those of this “business” – Groupon, everyone who purchased should be refunded immediately. Even if you have not decided what to do. The fact that there’s this much controversy and shadiness around it should be enough.

Everyone should chill out. Cancel your order if you don’t want it anymore. Simple as that. I did it and instantly received an email from Groupon with confirmation of the cancellation and when to expect my refund. (5-7 business days) Only took a minute to do.

Jodie O.

Tamera, exactly.

I’ve tried to tell Groupon before that this is bad business. To allow photographers to come on here and sell out thousands of “deals” that let me tell you, speaking as a professional – full time business for 7 years now – I know for a fact that this is an impossible schedule to keep. Simple math will tell you that after Groupon takes it’s cut, she will be left with $35. After she pays her gas money, pays for her equipment, even internet service and office supplies…. next, the session, the travel time, the editing, the burning on CD… now we are seriously talking, working for not even minimum wage, but we are looking at $1 or $2 an hour if she’s lucky, because by my calculations, and how I personally work as a professional, I would be in the red, as in, NEGATIVE a few dollars an hour. A fellow professional just said to me recently, she would be better off paying each person $75 to stay home and not do the session.

Groupon admins, as a business, you know yourself that this is bad business. It’s bad business for the photographer, and it is bad business for you when you condone fraud by allowing it to stay here. Please refund, and please reconsider some of your advertisers.

amy w.

For all of you just seeing this and wanting to buy, check out the past comments (page 6 or so). This “photographer”, until she was busted, had stolen images on her website and was representing them as her own. Dishonest! I would NEVER go to her for business.

LINDA H.

People need to understand that there is no way a professional photographer can do 1,000 sessions per year! I’m a pro photographer and I estimate to spend approximately 25 hours per client on shootiong/editing/emails/sales/ordering, etc. If she could even narrow that time to 10/client and she worked 52 weeks per year she would have to work 193 hours PER WEEK to get everyone done. And 10 hours is not very much time to give each client stunning photographs! If she spent 25 hours on each client that would mean she would have to work 480 hours PER WEEK to get everyone completed in one year. She’s a fraud, she has stollen other pro photographer’s photographs to deceive and take people’s money. People who are buying into her deal will not be getting what she is advertising. Her work is not even close to what she is presenting. Groupon needs to better evaluate these “businesses” before presenting these deals! I betcha she is not a registered biz in her state, does not pay taxes and does not have proper insurance or education or skills either! Groupon should be checking these “businesses” out before putting these deals out there to the public. It’s clearly a problem if someone is scamming folks out of their hard earned money! It’s an insult to the rest of the professionals out there who are working our butts off to give our clients only the best. Stealing photos is ILLEGAL and she can be prosecuted for that alone, never mind the fact that she has deceived and scammed people! This “business” person could be in a lot of legal hot water after today!

I called Groupon and canceled my order very easily. The number is 877-788-7858.

C A.

I also called to cancel my order. The number is (877) 788-7858. Even though, I made the purchase today, I did not have the link to edit/cancel my order online. The call only took a few minutes, and I was told my credit card will be refunded in 3 to 5 business days.

Tanya S.

Currently on hold with Groupon Customer Service….

Jodie O.

Good, Tanya, you deserve answers.

crystal s.

Dana, you have been caught….there is no way around it. Admit it, apologize and save yourself some face. Denying it or continuing to lie is only going to get you into worse trouble.

Groupon,
This is an embarrassment, particularly for you. Do you not verify the business standing of those who want to advertise with you? Thousands of people are buying your ‘deals’. You have a responsibility to make sure the businesses are indeed legitimate businesses.

Tanya S.

Apparently you can only be “on hold” for so long before you’re forced to leave a message. If I do not hear from SOMEONE at Groupon, I am going to be seriously disappointed.

Bethany G.

I can not figure out how to cancel my groupon purchase??? HELP!!!!!

Don’t hold your breathe Tanya. Groupon is only going to look out for themselves.

I. M.

Tanya: You want to come to Atlanta and take some pictures? Obviously there’s a lot of people who saw your work and liked it, me for one. We just didn’t know it was yours.

C A.

@ Bethany G. Call their customer service line (877) 788-7858.

Amy J.

whoa whoa whoa, i have to come to Groupon’s defense here.
first of all, you cannot expect groupon to have image recognition software (although after this madness, they may want to invest!)
I’m sure right now they are trying to figure everything out. Groupon is known for their excellent customer service: http://www.churchofcustomer.com/2010/07/in-customer-service-groupon-is-the-new-zappos.html
I have a feeling that they will jump on here as soon as they have everything sorted out.
Why is everyone so down on Groupon? Tasha… did you have a bad experience?

And Tanya, I’m sure you will hear back from them, but you should be patient about this. Groupon didn’t steal your images- Dana did!

Tracy S.

WOW this is something else! I see photographers work being stolen time and time again, and it just blows my mind that someone would stoop so low! Stealing someone else’s work never occured to me when I was starting the process of building my portfolio.
Dana its time to fess up and admit you were wrong and apologize to these photographers. The people who purchased this groupon should be given a refund, or at least be able to make a choice once they see your REAL work.
And you STILL have stolen photos up on your site!

Tanya S.

I.M …..I’d be happy to….but not for $65 sorry :(

Amy, I know Groupon didn’t steal my images, but they allowed people to be scammed, USING my images, for MUCH longer than needed. I deserve to know that Groupon is not profiting in ANY manner from the theft of them.

Jodie O.

Amy J… image recognition software is free online… it’s a beta.

Secondly, they CAN and SHOULD verify that businesses are real. They need to require proof of legit businesses – EIN numbers, tax ID numbers, whatever they need to do to make sure that this business is upstanding and REAL.

Tracy S.

Groupon might have a wonderful customer service, but this is a big mess up. I’m interested to know what kind of screening process, if any that groupon does before offering these deals?

crystal s.

I second Jodie O.

Groupon is putting these out there, they are responsible for at least attempting to verify a legitimate business.

Scarlett B.

T-Totally busted. She is a total and absolute scammer, and has been caught. She can delete all day long, but there are saved screen shots and PPA does not take this sort of thing lightly. It is clear from looking at her site what images are not her own. For goodness sake the actual OWNERS of these pictures have chimed in here Groupon, how is there any question at this point. For the people who bought this sale, I would follow the steps to get a refund ASAP or be prepared to be incredibly disappointed in this scam. As a professional photographer myself I find it absolutely absurd that Groupon does these sorts of deals with “fauxtographers” when there is no way on earth they will be able to fufill 1200 portrait clients at $65 a piece within one year. Crazy talk.

Jodie O.

All parties involved, have you been contacted yet? I didn’t think so. :(

Marla W.

Anyone notice that the Groupon photo of Dana’s ad is no longer the same? Did someone hack that too?

Marla W.

Oh, and you can still buy this Groupon. 9 available as of right now. I guess when people cancel, Groupon is making them available again.

Alex F.

Groupon doesn’t need image recognition software; it already exists and can be used for free. I can’t say if it would’ve found these copies because it only updates sporadically, but it is better than nothing:

http://www.tineye.com/

I also wrote up a breakdown of another photographer who sold over 1,000 sessions and I also don’t see how the math can come out positive for a working pro (especially when you give away so much with the deal that you leave little incentive to purchase more but still require that you take care of the customer with deliverables):

http://www.shotinvancouver.com/vancouver/tech-talk-for-photographers/breakdown-of-a-photographers-groupon-deal-65000-moneymaker-or-madness/

Josh at Groupon .

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your patience and discussion while we were working this out. We are sincerely sorry for all of the confusion and frustration over this offer today.

We would never intentionally feature a business that engages in unethical or questionable business practices, nor would we ever expect you to be stuck with a Groupon that is offered by such a business. We have decided to pull this deal today after reviewing all of the feedback left on the discussion board.

We have instantly canceled all of your orders and immediately refunded you for this purchase. If you’ve already been charged for this, you can expect to see the refund appear on your credit card statement in 7-10 business days.

We deeply regret the unfortunate events leading up to this decision and are extremely sorry for any inconvenience we’ve caused you. We appreciate all of your great feedback and will continue to treasure it and listen to it always.

If you have any questions or need anything else at all, please contact us at support@groupon.com.

Thank you,

Groupon should be checking these businesses out. They should be checking EIN #‘s and tax ID #’s as Jodi above stated. They should also check with the appropriate state to make sure the biz is registered and in good standing. The biz should be able to present an insurance binder. They should be legal, legitimate businesses. If Groupon cannot provide that protection to their clients they are just taking advantage of consumers! As consumers we need to take action into our own hands! Just because someone says they are a photographer doesn’t mean they are! Many folks have no idea what they are doing! Make sure your photographer is experienced, has a great reputation and education, insurance, licensing an is backed by the PPA! If they are not, they are just robbing the other legitimate photographers of business, the state of taxes and you of getting what you paid for! Don’t fall for stuff like this! Go to someone reputable! It’s easy to go online to your state’s website to check these places out to see if they are registered!

Natasha J.

OMG! This is hilarious! :D

Wow! This Dana person apparently has no integrity. Not only is she a thief, she’s responding to being caught by being a liar, too. Confession is good for the soul, Dana. Admit what you did and make it right.

I am a HUGE fan of Groupon and I have high hopes they will make this right for all of the customers who were duped by this shady deal, as well as for the photographers whose images were stolen and used illegally in this advert. I’ve bought a dozen or so Groupons and had planned to buy a lot more, so I really hope Groupon does the right thing here. As a professional photographer myself, how the injured parties are treated in this situation will make a huge difference in my continued relationship with Groupon. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with Groupon myself so far, so I am counting on Groupon to do the right thing here and make this right for the customers who were duped and the photographers whose work was stolen.

Alex F.

Now posted on: http://danadawesphotography.com/index2.php (click Groupon)

“Due to an error made by my Webmaster in developing and creating my site, Groupon will no longer be offering this promotion… If you would like to keep your appointments, I will be charging $50 for the exact same offer.”

Really? Now your webmaster accidentally the whole thing?

I just canceled my Groupon, and they were very nice about it. I also some advice about not offering photography services, and how I am still waiting to redeem my Sarah Esther Photography Groupon, because she is so booked up. I bought this Groupon and quickly booked my session so that I could get the photos done before Christmas. Obviously I am not supporting a thief and a liar, so I canceled it.

crystal s.

Holy crap! And now she is offering this via her website….and still blaming her ‘webmaster’.
Shameless!!!!!

Becky B.

She claims that all of the images on her website are the property of Dana Dawes Photography, yet she still has Tayna’s image on her proofing tab.

Jodie O.

You’ve gotta be kidding me. You do not have a webmaster. You have a template. A webmaster would have NEVER had images placed on your site that were distorted in the way that they were. A webMASTER is called a webMASTER for a reason.

Un-freakin-believable. Remember Karma.

Cynthia J.

She lies, then she lies, then she lies!!

Jodie O.

Groupon – you should ask that she not associate your name (which I would assume is “copyrighted” or trademarked) with her new “deal”… as obviously, that’s bad business too. Just a suggestion.

Becky B.

And now, magically, I guess either someone hacked into her site again or her webmaster made another mistake, Tanya’s image that was on her proofing tab is now gone.
Dana, just freakin admit it! You have people all over the country LAUGHING at your stupid lies! Seriously, put on your big girl panties.

John W.

Well said Angela :>)

Monique P.

This is a low down dirty shame!!! I was very close to purchasing this for my pregnant cousin. I am so glad it had already ended before I did. I saw the other images on Dana’s website this morning that prompted me to purchase. Groupon please check people out before you post deals!!! I am a loyal customer!

Jodie O.

So local photogs swoop in to try to get the publicity. Sorry guys, but that’s what happens on every single one of these groupon photography ads…

Meggie B.

She has a business listing on Kudzu and Yelp.

http://www.kudzu.com/m/Dana-Dawes-Photography-21599387

http://www.yelp.com/biz/dana-dawes-photography-marietta

Review, review, review!

Jodie – FYI I am not a local photographer. I’m in Minneapolis. Just trying to participate in the discussion which has nothing to do with locality and give an opinion. :)

Karrie A.

She has no webmaster . . . her template is a Portfoliositez template, says so in the source code. I have my site with them and they don’t have a webmaster that does your template for you, it is all done by you including uploading your pictures for the template. :D Guess she lied AGAIN!

Kelly S.

Jodie,

I LOVE your work, I LOVE your comments, I LOVE how you call people out for what they are. Photographers trying to piggy back on a liar are just as bad. As an Atl based photographer I have been considering your workshops for a while, and if your work was not inspiring enough, your attitude is awesome! I may just have to fly up there!

Emily K.

Wow!! How crazy is this. Just received an e-mail from groupon that my order was being refunded. I had no idea this was going on after I purchased this earlier this am. I had already booked my session.
Angela L. I purchased this groupon today and I must say that your comment about how you feel sorry for people trying to save money really sucks. If people like me are so bad then why are you on this site? Being ugly is not a way to gain biz for yourself. People are so rude!!!

Emily – You’re right. I shouldn’t have said that, it wasn’t what I meant. Anyone not in the business would not know that you can’t do that many sessions, or it wouldn’t occur to them. I apologize. That didn’t come out the way I intended… If I could edit it out I would!

We are all trying to save money, and should be. I am a couponaholic and I’m the first one to look for a good deal. Like I said, that wasn’t what I meant… Desparate was a poor choice of words for sure.

I’m not an ugly person, I swear! :)

Suzanne P.

It is unfortunate that this happened in this instance, but I would like to say that I bought a Groupon deal similar to this (except it was a 30 min. shoot and no CD was provided) in February from Jennifer Schwartz Photography on Bennett Street and was EXCEEDINGLY pleased with the service and the photography from Jennifer. Just because someone offers a discounted deal on Groupon doesn’t mean they are a hack or a thief. I spent an additional $300 with Jennifer, buying prints from the shoot, which is how she makes her money. Do you guys not understand that is how promotions work? You get people in the door and then you hope they spend more once they are there. I will absolutely go back to Jennifer again, as I love her work with children, and I don’t feel in any way that her willingness to offer her services on Groupon says anything about her beyond the fact that she is a good business person in addition to being an excellent photographer.

Of course, I don’t in anyway condone stealing other people’s work. I know we’re all glad that this unfair and illegal activity was uncovered and I, personally, think Groupon responded quickly and appropriately. There is no need to be negative haters towards Groupon. If you don’t like them, unsub.

Good post, Suzanne… my point exactly!

Jaime H.

Go to yelp and post a negative review.

David A.

Ugh!! Just missed the deal…is it too late? Any chance of taking my money?

Jodie O.

Suzanne – yes, that’s the point. A legitimate professional photographer knows that they HAVE to make money on their clients in some way, shape, or form. In Dana’s deal (as well as many others I see), they give away digital negatives, and there is no reason for any of their clients to then buy more from them because they now can make as many copies as they wish. So if anyone spots these “give it all away” deals for such a low cost (and don’t forget, groupon takes half) and have capped their sales so they cannot make money off of additional purchases (i.e. upsale), they are obviously not legitimate pro photographers paying their taxes and insurance, etc. as pros do, and as a consumer, if you can spot this, you will definitely be able to avoid all the problems with dealing with an un-professional business.

David A.

oh never mind, now that I am reading the posts…

Wow, so now she is offering a “Groupon” on her own? Isnt that nice that she is using Groupons name but they are not getting their cut. That surely is illegal! What a low life.

Tamera .

yeah, you may want to catch up, David. lol ;-)

@ jodie – good points. I can see all of that and understand. It’s the same for me when I see cake related deals (the Frosted and Sprinkled one that was a disaster as well).

Suzanne also makes a great point that I think many forget. Groupon should be looked at and used (form a business perspective) as a way to market and advertise….not a means to make money. Just as you’d invest money to advertise by other means. However, if the new work does end up taking over your entire world and making you hate life – you didn’t think it through properly.

Thank you Groupon for stepping in and doing the right thing!

I think people need to be careful with the mob mentality as well. Yes, she messed up big time but please be careful about posting people’s personal (not related to her biz or this groupon) information and going on a google rampage. Nothing wrong with warning people but some have a tendency to take it to another, unnecessary level.

I am in the market for a Professional photographer to capture inspiring images of my newborn twins. How do I find a ligit photographer at a good price?

Great point Tamera. I’m glad she was called out and I cancelled my order. And, I think those photographers whose images she stole should go after her for whatever restitution they can get.

But, the ongoing attacks and digging into her personal life are a bit much…not to mention the free plugs folks seem to be giving their own businesses at her expense.

Now with her deal on her site she is cutting out the middle man, Groupon, and charging $50. She is up on the deal now instead of getting $37. This is all crazy!

John W.

That was NOT my intention to offend anyone nor attempt to piggyback this sad issue…while I may have been better served to rethink my statement before posting, it was and is in no wat an attempt to pursue business that is not in my wheelhouse anyway…my apologies to any who interpredt this as such

Amy P.

This is SICK! I am a high school English teacher, beating the “no plagiarism” drum all day and here we have a so-called professional readily stealing images and claiming them to be her own. Nice! Groupon, all I can say is THANK YOU for refunding all of our monies and saving us from what could have been disaster! Please do research a bit further next time. Russell—Gina Cellino does nice work. Good luck!

Nancy M.

I don’t know… If I were a professional photographer I probably would put my information on this thread. There are obviously people out there interested in having professional portraits done but have no clue where to begin looking other than Sears.

Of course, you’re not going to pay $65 for a real professional photography session but at least you’d have an idea of what to look for.

In the end, 1,200 people who were interested in having their pictures taken are now no better off than they were this morning. I see a few people have given a few names, maybe we can make this thread more positive if people would start recommending CREDIBLE Atlanta photographers here that they know or have used.

That way, the people who are willing to pay for a real session can still do so and a photographer that is worth his/her salt can get a new client.

Just my 2-cents. =)

Heidi S.

Oh geez. This is sad and hilarious and disturbing and annoying all at the same time. As a professional photographer, I am outraged by what Dana has done….but seriously amused by just how stupid this was.

Yesterday evening I had a company that I had hired to make final changes to my site that they had just created this week. As part of creating my site, they inserted images as place holders, so I could see what the site would look like. After sending them my images yesterday evening, they uploaded them and did not remove the place holder images.

Yeah that’s a lie. Why wouldn’t they use her own images? Now she’s saying that this company is responsible for stealing the work of other photographers BUT that DOESN’T explain why these same images were on her Facebook business page. And even if this was the case, why would you want to continue using a business that steals images from other photographers?

It’s just sad that rather than owning up to making a mistake, she’s continually trying to put the blame on her “web developers”.

Sarah

OMG…using photos as placeholders…ummm NO! “Webmasters” don’t do this sort of thing! What about the image that was used to promoted this ad that included some of the STOLEN images? Did the webmaster design that and submit it to Groupon as well?? Did the webmaster upload the images as “placeholders” into the Facebook galleries as well?

Wow! This woman has me fuming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there was an actual company involved on her website, they would have used free stock images. Give it up already, girl.

Sarah H.

I think my favorite part was about sending her the paypal for her services…after all this…before your session. HA!

I might be stupid enough to overlook the inconsistent photos on your original website, believing that the good ones were actually yours, but you’re not fooling me twice. No Thanks!

I guess a sucker really is born every day.

ps. Thanks to all who exposed this lady as a fraud. I would have been greatly upset after my session to end up with photos I myself could have taken better with my point-and-shoot. Kudos!

Gregory M.

SWEET JESUS!! Dana Dawes is offering a 110% Money Back Guarantee!!!!

So when I go get my pics taken by her and they end up sucking, not only do I get MY money back, but she’s gonna give me an additional $5 out of her own pocket!?!?!?

This may change the game for photographers everywhere people. Take Note.

Take. Serious. Note.

Juliann M.

As this situation does not seem to be resolving in that this so called photographer is continuing to try to scam people into purchasing her services, perhaps the Better Business Bureau in Atlanta needs to be contacted and Ms. Dawes’ actions brought to their attention. She appears to be trying to take advantage of all the controversy this Groupon has created and profit from it. Negative attention is better than no attention, and a sucker is born every day. Buyer beware.

I am also a long time professional photographer here in the Atlanta area & because this is the 2nd time recently a local photographer has been called out on Groupon, I feel I need to jump in. Which is more disturbing? That someone would actually stoop to such lows? Or the fact that Groupon seems to be dropping the ball on checking out business references before allowing unrealistic offers to be made? Karma dictates that it’s not really my business- UNTIL I saw that this person is now cutting out Groupon & has actually created a link where she can still take in money from un-suspecting consumers while the “deal” is fresh. This is appalling at best. Everyone can relax about getting refunds as I am confident Groupon will do the right thing- if not there is a little thing called Merchant services which dictates that your own credit card company will do a charge back in the event of such disputes. What troubles me most is the simple fact that it seems every day our profession has to fight harder & defend our knowledge & experience even more. I LIVE for newborns & kids & getting to know their families & creating images that will be treasured forever. (Note I WILL NOT use this opportunity to promote my own studio, just saying…) and it is hard to swallow that now we can’t even use the term “Professional” proudly- knowing the blood, sweat & tears that went into gaining that distinction. We can only hope to band together & encourage each other & have each other’s back (like what unfolded today.) I would be beyond upset if my images were stolen. PPA is based here in Atlanta & has helped me in such cases & this incident should absolutely be investigated & legally pursued. People, we need to watch the budget just like you. But the bottom line is you get what you pay for & these kind of happenings are just hurting those committed- business minded- tax paying- passionate folks like myself who are literally working our hearts out perfecting a craft that will be respected & appreciated. I hope this opens a new way for Groupon to determine who is qualified to call themselves professional “anythings” without due dilligence. I would consider using them myself but there would be a well earned “cost for quality” factor going on. Ü

Nancy M. – I completely agree!

My wife is due in December…This is our third child, and I had not thought of scheduling a photo session until I saw this groupon this morning. I immediately bought it, my wife is excited about the session, and I have earned major brownie points!

So, as inappropriate as it may seem, I have to thank Dana for prompting me to schedule this session. We will cherish the pictures for a lifetime once they are complete. However, since I will not support a thief and a liar, I will need someone else to take the pictures.

Sp, Jodie (or any of the others who helped expose Dana), do you have recommendations for those of us who are now back in the market for a good photographer?

SP – Thanks for exposing her
Tanya – I wish you were in Atlanta, your photos are amazing!
Groupon – Thanks for making this right
All – Thanks for entertaining me today!

I use the company that is her “webmaster” which is Portfoliositez and they do NOT have placeholders in their websites. They show images which they have permission to use in their demo sites but none of those images come preloaded with your website. You have to upload all images on your own.

Please stop pointing the finger at others Dana. First it was hackers, now it’s the webmaster. Each new excuse is just making a further mockery of this disaster.

Emily

Also as an Atlanta photographer, this whole deal makes me sad. While I’d love to tell you all to “book me” I feel that’s really inappropriate, but I do hope that all you looking for a photographer find someone professional, and who fits in with exactly what you want, and that you love their work. Booking a photographer because they’re cheap rarely leads to great photos. :/

Steven K.

Emily, Rainy C., all other pro’s out there…
By all means post your site. If others complain than blame it on me – I have thick skin!

I recommend looking at either WPJA or ISPWP. Both organizations have an approval process (PPA and WPPI both accept anyone that gives them money) to find a legit photographer.

Her website was created by Portfoliositez (a company that creates template-based sites for photographers)… I wonder if they know she’s claiming that they stole other photographers’ images and uploaded them to her site as placeholders? She says in that email that the company who “created” the site is the same company she hired to make changes to it last night. As far as I know, Portfoliositez doesn’t do customizations, but they might be interested to know that apparently they not only do them, they steal other photogs’ images in the process…

Lisa R.

I ran a successful photography business in Atlanta for several years, until we recently relocated out of state. To those looking for a photographer, there are many, many talented artists in the Atlanta area. And just as many who are not.

If you’re looking for “cheap,” you will likely end up with someone who lacks artistry, isn’t licensed, doesn’t have insurance, nor pays taxes. And it’s those photographers who undermine and hurt those who actually invest time, effort and money into making sure they will provide you with a professional service from start to finish.

Your memories are important, so do your research before hiring someone. Are they licensed, are they insured, are they a member of PPA? If not, you might end up with someone who decided photography was a nice way to make a quick buck (case in point, apparently).

Jen T.

Umm and just as an FYI..she has a Facebook business page, I would encourage anyone to help inform people on her page about her…jus sayin.

Emily

Totally agree with Lisa R! (BTW, LOOOOOVE your work!)

Michelle G.

If she’s not a legitimate business then this whole series of posts is a very very dangerous thing for her. The “customers” who have sworn to have used her in the past years and her professions of being in business for 5 years allows the state to go back on her for that 5 years for the average income a photographer makes. HOLY BILL!

Jennifer S.

Ok so groupon dropped the ball on checking the company and the photographer was a scam artist. But assuming a photographer working with groupon is lacking in artistry or in any way not legitimate is inaccurate bottom line. Working with groupon to reach the masses allows you the opportunity to lower rates. And the more happy clients you have out there, the more referral business you will have. Working with groupon allows you to bust your butt working and getting your name out there if you don’t have thousands for trade shows, magazine and web site ads. On another note, just starting to recover from a crummy economy and not happy about the bad rep this gives photographers or any small business owner.
