Victorian Bed and Breakfast amid Lush 19th-Century Park

The oak-lined promenades of Savannah's Forsyth Park lead to a large central fountain, built in 1858, adorned with trumpeting tritons spouting water into the air. Forsyth Park Inn is situated on the northwestern edge of the park, and you can sit in a rocking chair on the inn's front veranda to get a view of this elegant fountain. The inn itself isn't too shabby to look at, either: it's a 19th-century Queen Anne mansion featuring neoclassical columns and crisp, white trim.

Walk past a parlor filled with orchids and hanging ferns, and you'll find the inn's grand staircase, which leads to ornate guest rooms. Period-inspired details, such as four-poster beds and claw-foot bathtubs, are featured prominently in the rooms. Some accommodations feature 12-foot windows or 14-foot ceilings. Outside, there's a courtyard garden blooming with azaleas and rosebushes set amid a secluded cottage with its own efficiency kitchen and a deck.

In the afternoon, there's a spread of hors d'oeuvres, and in the evening, innkeepers offer housemade desserts and decaf coffee. The following morning, the resident chefs whip up an elaborate southern breakfast, which may include peaches-and-cream-cheese-stuffed french toast and egg scrambles with smoked sausage and grits. You can feel free to dine on the veranda or in the parlor.

Savannah: Historic District Lined with Vintage Mansions near Tybee Island

Forsyth Park is located amid the southern half of the Savannah Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District with cobblestone streets, 18th- and 19th-century mansions, and city squares lined with monuments. The nearby Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum chronicles the legacy of local civil-rights activism with exhibits; there's a re-created lunch counter on display that commemorates the historic sit-ins that took place throughout the region.

About a half hour drive east is Tybee Island, which has excellent beaches and views of the lush southern landscape. It's also worth it to explore the antebellum brick fort at Fort Pulaski National Monument, which is still pocked by Civil War–era cannon blasts. The fort overlooks rolling hills, sparkling inlets, and the remains of 19th-century laser guns.
