Seaside Resort with Cottages Overlooking Penobscot Bay

The Camden area of Maine is noted as a place where “mountains meet the sea.” Deep cliffs and craggy shores butt up against the Atlantic Ocean here. You can get great views of this scenery at Glenmoor by the Sea, a resort right on the waterfront. It boasts two new expansive decks that double as lookout points, and every guestroom and cottage has its own private deck or balcony.

Glenmoor is located on 12 acres of rolling hillsides, and its accommodations are scattered amid higher and lower altitudes. As such, each has its own advantages and unique characteristics. “Breakers” cottages sit at the water’s edge, and are conveniently located by the lower-level pool and stairs to the shore. “Highlands” rooms, meanwhile, occupy higher terrain and overlook the bay and nearby islands. They also have easy access to the upper-level pool and tennis court.

Each day at the resort begins with a complimentary continental breakfast. Afterwards, you can head to the expansive lawn area to enjoy croquet, badminton, or bocce ball. Come evening, guests often meet up and roast marshmallows at the stone-lined fire-pit or enjoy the view on the waterfront deck as the moon appears over the bay.

Lincolnville, Maine: Quaint Villages Along Scenic Midcoast

A string of charming fishing villages dots the southeastern stretch of Midcoast Maine. Typical of the Pine Tree State, it’s a popular place for outdoorsy activities year-round; that includes fishing, hiking, sailing, kayaking, and biking.

Five minutes from Glenmoor by the Sea is Camden Hills State Park. Its Bald Rock Trail was hailed by Departures magazine as one of the most scenic walks in the world. Hike up a half-mile trail to an elevation of 1,100 feet and you can get a view of both Cadillac Mountain and schooners in Camden Harbor.

A number of niche museums are scattered throughout the area’s coastal towns. The Owls Head Transportation Museum displays vehicles from the past, such as vintage sports cars, airplanes, 19th-century bicycles, and horse-drawn segways. The Farnsworth Art Museum showcases indigenous Maine artists and artwork depicting the nation’s most northeasterly state. Among the museum’s most notable holdings: Winslow Homer's New England Coast – Sailing Ships in Harbor and several works by Andrew Wyeth.
