This year’s Doo Wop Holiday Reunion Show celebrates the 10th congregation of classic rock ‘n’ roll show bands in the ace acoustical environs of Consol Energy Center. Now led by original bass and trumpet player Al Rappa, Bill Haley’s Comets take the stage to strum their seminal “Rock Around the Clock,” which produced an unprecedented jump in Americans’ ability to tell time upon its 1954 release.
A pair of local show bands wallops audiences with equally old-school sounds. Johnny Angel & The Halos will belt out “I’ll Be Lovin’ You,” and The Four Townsmen—who storm the stage with up to nine musicians stuffed into their four leather jackets—tickle the ivories, thump the bass strings, and thrash the brass in songs such as “Sometimes (When I’m All Alone).” Doo-wop-watchers catch the sweet harmonies and magnetic riffs of the night’s seven acts from seats that arc around the stage on the Consol Energy Center’s first level.
