Though best known for expanding the limits of human thought, the great philosophers were also ardent proponents of skin treatments—rarely furrowing their brows without first applying a de-furrowing cucumber mask. Today’s Groupon will wipe out your own philosophical furrows: for $89, you get $270 worth of spa services or a three-month gym membership at Nourish by Spa Chakra (a $267 value). The spa and gym are located inside the Union Square Hilton. Spa Chakra was named among the Top Spa Brands Worldwide in the SpaFinder 2009 Readers' Choice Awards.

The elegant spa offers a variety of lavish treatments to treat tired Thoreau scholars and their transcendentalist companions. Stop in for an express manicure ($35) and pedicure ($45) to repair damage incurred during sandcastle-building contests, or opt for an eyebrow wax and shaping ($25) to ensure optimal expression of emotion. A 60-minute massage ($180) is customized to suit the kneading needs of your body and mind, and an hour-long essential exfoliating body treatment ($180) calmly sloughs away unwanted skin scales. To pamper your body like a pro wrestler, exchange your Groupon for a three-month membership to the state-of-the-art gym (normally $89 per month) to work and sweat your way toward a physique that will make statues weep sodium pebbles from their rocky eyes.

Inside the posh spa space, a certified and professional pamperer administers each relaxing treatment. The 13,000-square-foot beauterie boasts an elegant and understated design awash in calming neutral tones and complete with 10 treatment separate rooms. Use your Groupon to enjoy a day of respite from the city streets or to become immersed in three months of shape shifting. Call ahead to schedule an appointment in the spa.

Reviews

Spa Chakra was chosen as one of the Best Spa Brands in the SpaFinder 2009 Readers' Choice Awards, and Yelpers give it three stars:

  • Ive [sic] had a lot of spa experiences and I'd say this one is worth the price!! – Ruka J.
  • It was relaxing and peaceful. I got my massage first and it went very well. She used just the right amount of pressure and covered all my problem areas (neck and shoulders). I was completely relaxed after the massage. – Candace F.
  • I've always been impressed with the product and the friendliness of the staff. – Emmett M.

Oh, Ashmont!

"Hello, friends, my name is Sir Steven Chutley. If that name sounds familiar, then you must have been a fan of the popular comedy show, Oh, Ashmont!, which aired on the BBC from 1977–1980—so named after my bumbling manservant Ashmont. What few people don't know is that the premise and many episodes of the show are based upon Ashmont and my various misadventures. Like the time Lady Thornthrope was attending Chutley Manor for the St. Stouffers Day Feast and Ashmont accidentally mixed up my Midnight's Toast with a rather saucy, erotic-styled letter I'd written to the good Lady Chutley. Or when I was going to give an exhibition of my new Rolls for the local vicar, until Ashmont defenestrated him while in the throes of a fever dream. And I believe there was a story involving the village meatsman that eludes me. Let's see here, I'll just get my diary. I believe it's here in my desk drawer. What's this? Wasps?! Oh, Ashmont!"

A surprising number of Oh, Ashmont! episodes ended with wasps.
