Blade-free IntraLase procedures correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism with a computer-guided excimer laser with eye-tracking technology. During the 10- to 15-minute LASIK procedure, a blade-free IntraLase laser creates a corneal flap, which the surgeon folds back before reshaping the cornea with the excimer laser. The surgeon then replaces the corneal flap, which re-bonds with the rest of the cornea on its own without sutures. This procedure yields virtually no discomfort, and patients can typically see well enough to drive the day after the procedure. PRK uses the same excimer laser with eye-tracking technology to reshape the cornea. Unlike LASIK, the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelial cells) is completely removed in order to allow the excimer laser to reshape the deeper corneal layers. Because of this, recovery time can be longer than that of LASIK as the corneal layer must replace itself, which can take a few days.
